So I’ve been living alone for a while now. I left my parents' house in Ogun State because, let’s be honest, the power supply there was terrible 😩. Adulting has been a mix of discovery, cravings, and unexpected adventures and this was one of those days.
It all started with a simple craving: real food. You know the kind that tastes like home? I was seriously craving Éfo Riró, one of my favorite Nigerian dishes. But there was one small problem, I didn’t know how to make it 😅.
Watch My Vlog 👇🏼 🎥
So I did what every smart, hungry adult would do... I called the person I love the most in the world ❤️, my Mum. She gave me a step-by-step guide over the phone (as she always does), and I became less confused.
I shared the idea of turning this whole process into a vlog with my cousin, and he was totally into it 🎥. He’s been looking for a reason to record something, so this felt like the perfect opportunity. We charged the camera, packed our bags, and headed to the market.
Market Adventures 🛍️🌶️
We started with me asking for cooking help on camera (yes, it was both funny and slightly embarrassing 😂). Then we hit the market streets. One thing I must say is that my bargaining skills have really improved! I felt like a proper Yoruba woman navigating her way through stalls of ingredients. (P.S I'm a guy)
By pure coincidence, we ran into a good friend of mine, Hannah 👋🏽. She’s great at cooking and was more than happy to give me extra tips on how to make the soup perfect. She even took us to the best spot to buy fresh pepper 🌶️. Lowkey, you just know the food will be great when you get good looking pepper.
We got everything we needed:
Pomo (cow skin)
Panla (stock fish)
Tomato and Atarodo (red bell peppers )
Fresh green leafy vegetables
Unfortunately, meat was a bit too expensive for my budget this time, so we had to skip it. The market women were also super helpful and warm. I had little chats with a few of them who shared their own cooking hacks and seasoning tricks 👵🏽✨.
The Final Result 🍛
I plan to make another video soon, and maybe next time, I’ll take you all through the actual cooking steps so you can learn to make Éfo Riró the way my mum taught me.
P.S: I really miss my mum’s food. I might just run home soon for that “Sunday rice” vibe 🍚😭.
