Sangwaa is an amulet from Okinawa, the land where my grandparents were born. It's made from a folded plant leaf and placed in a lunchbox or any food container. Its purpose is to ward off lost and hungry spirits who might spoil or ruin the food if they try to eat it. Today I decided to create an artwork of it for the Challenge: Drawing (almost) every day on the iPad.
Actually, I don't remember seeing this amulet among the customs or beliefs of my family, which were many and which I've already mentioned here in Superstition and camphorated alcohol at great-grandmother's house and An old dream with a giant moth. You may never have noticed, after all the sangwaa is small and I don't think it would attract attention, besides, food being carried back and forth was a common occurrence, both at the bakery I mentioned in the drawing Japanese baker and the Fleischmann yeast course or even at events like The pink color of table paper at parties.
Anyway, after learning about this custom, I recognized the amulet on the packaging of typical food I bought at the last Okinawa Festival held here in São Paulo, Brazil, and even shared it in an Instagram photo. I also found this video narrated in Japanese and Uchinaaguchi (Okinawan language) with subtitles in English, Portuguese, and Spanish:
Since I'm studying the language which, according to the UN, is threatened with extinction but is still spoken in São Paulo, I translated the morning prayer that is narrated at 4:12 in the video. Regarding the language, I previously translated a song in Ashimiji Bushi (汗水節) - Song of Sweating like water fountain, and following below the transcription of the prayer:
Shitimiti nu Ugwan (してぃみてぃぬ御願) - Morning Prayer
さりうーとーとぅー あーとーとぅー
Sari uutootuu Aatootuu
My humble prayer
今日ぬ 良かる 日に

Sangwáa é um amuleto de Okinawa, terra onde nasceram meus avós, feito com uma folha de planta dobrada para colocar na marmita ou qualquer recipiente com comida, cuja função é afastar os espíritos perdidos e famintos que podem estragar ou azedar caso venham tentar comer. Hj resolvi fazer uma arte dele para o Desafio: Desenhando (quase) todo dia no iPad.
Na verdade não lembro de ter visto este amuleto entre os costumes, crenças ou superstições de minha família, que eram muitas e já mencionei aqui em Simpatia e álcool canforado na casa da bisavó e Um sonho antigo com uma mariposa gigante. Pode ser que nunca tenha reparado, afinal o sangwáa é pequeno e não acho que chamaria a atenção, além do mais comida sendo levada pra lá e pra cá eram situações corriqueiras, tanto na padaria que comentei no desenho Japonês padeiro e o curso do fermento Fleischmann ou mesmo em eventos como O cor de rosa do papel das mesas nas festas.
De qq forma, depois de conhecer este costume, reconheci o amuleto na embalagem de comida típica que comprei no último Okinawa Festival e até compartilhei em uma foto no Instagram. Tb encontrei este video narrado em japonês e uchinaaguchi (língua okinawana) com legendas em inglês, português e espanhol:
Como estou estudando a língua que, segundo a ONU, está ameaçada de desaparecer mas ainda é falada em São Paulo, fiz a tradução da oração da manhã que é narrada aos 4:12 do video. Sobre o idioma, fiz antes a tradução de uma música em Ashimiji Bushi (汗水節) - Canção suando em bicas, e a transcrição da prece publiquei no Charmverse (tipo um wiki/Notion em Web3) Ruuchuu na pg Shitimiti nu Ugwan (してぃみてぃぬ御願) - Oração da Manhã.
