Ooh, the triple S strikes the title crafting! I likes!
It's been a very busy past three days here in the woods. The Battle Of Thistle Heights has wrapped up, with our side making great gains in the conflict. We even managed to take out some knapweed that was trying to invade right under our noses. Like I don't know what that invasive little twerp looks like, hello mow and slash!
Honestly, I think all the mowing has made me a bit batty. I am going to blame it on the film and crust currently covering my eyes and overt exhaustion. Both of those things would make anyone a bit addled.
Anyway, now that we have gotten at least a bit ahead on mowing down all the invasive plants before they bloom (I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE INTRODUCE INVASIVE SPECIES TO PRISTINE, UNTOUCHED ECOSYSTEMS!!!!! AHHHHH!)
Okay, sorry, had to get that out.
Back to it, now that we are finally not needing to mow every second of our lives, I have been branching out into other chores and things. Well, that, and today I am under orders to rest because I have overdone it and my thyroid is sorta, kinda very annoyed at me, so I am a bit of a corpse of a wreck.
But, I still managed to do cool things like whip up a batch of fresh huckleberry syrup. I'm pretty excited about the syrup, as I also took some discard off of Buford (my sourdough starter), and made some pancake batter that I have had in the fridge fermenting over night for this evening's breakfast for dinner extravaganza!
Another fun thing that I did was clean out the garden boxes, add some composted cattle manure, and seed some fall Nantes carrots. I love carrots! I still need to do the Asian greens, radishes, spinach, and lettuce, which I was going to do today, but I am supposed to rest, so maybe I will get to that Monday.
Speaking of Monday, I got my formal invite into the Social Work program. I can't believe that I am heading back to school by mid August. I am really not ready, it doesn't even feel like I have had a break, because I haven't, but as I am entering the downhill slide in my school attendance journey, I am more than a bit excited about that too.
And it hasn't been all work and no play, the hubs and I ran down the hill to the little tavern in the neighboring burg and had a couple delectable mushroom Swiss burgers. After snacking on food we didn't have to prepare ourselves, which is quite a treat when you live off grid as we do now, we diverted a bit and checked on the north side of the ranch on the way home.
The north field is just so pretty. You wind through a road that snakes through the trees, and then wham! Your face is greeted with a meadow most serene and beautiful. There's a cool deer stand shack too.
Life here unfolds rather differently than my life back home. There are daily chores, same as there, but the pace is different, and there is a very glaring lack of people and interruptions. After two and a half decades of living on our farm, working in our community, and volunteering profusely, the hubs and I were very known and way too available. It has done us both some good to be, well, just gone.
I miss everyone sure, but it's different. Leave it to us to change so abruptly. It makes me wonder what else life has in store for us!
