“My mojito in the Bodeguita” is the fragment of a phrase that the writer Ernest Hemingway used to repeat in the time when he lived in Havana, referring to the drink that was served in La Bodeguita del Medio, an emblematic place of Old Havana, known for being one of the references of traditional Cuban creole food.
This establishment, turned into a very visited restaurant, is located just a few steps from the Plaza de la Catedral, on Empedrado Street, one of the four that cross this famous colonial square. Arriving from the Port of Havana and walking along this street we have a charming view of the Colonial Plaza. This area is exclusively pedestrian; among the cobblestones of the street there are small cannons embedded that indicate the prohibition of entry to vehicles.
At this time of the year the streets of the historic center are filled with tourists, and this area is one of the most visited within the tourist tours that take place in Old Havana, therefore in its surroundings we always find many foreign visitors.
On one side of the Plaza is the always crowded Bodeguita del Medio, which began as a modest establishment where basic products were sold, that with time was expanded and gained identity thanks to its strategic location and the growing flow of people who went to the establishment. Its seal was consolidated with the creole food that was offered there, and currently it is also famous for the Mojito, one of the most emblematic cocktails of Cuba and a distinctive seal of the place.
The name of the establishment is due to its location, right in the middle of the block, on Empedrado between San Ignacio and Cuba. At that time it was common for the grocery stores to be found on the corners, which is why this one was popularly named “the little grocery store in the middle,” a denomination that its owner ended up immortalizing.
Over the years the place has received the visit of countless personalities from the arts, literature, politics, and sports. Its walls are proof of this since they are covered with signatures and dedications that overlap one upon another to the point that on occasions they have had to be repainted to give space to new rubrics. Every customer who passes through there has the opportunity to leave their mark and this is equally captivating.
The surroundings are always cheerful, where traditional Cuban music is heard, which many times is played live. In the street, art is shown in every corner since in several places there are points of sale of paintings, handicrafts, and souvenirs. All this atmosphere surrounded by the colonial architecture that characterizes the streets of Havana.
That is why visiting this street and La Bodeguita del Medio is not only enjoying its cocktails and the tasty food, but living a whole experience with the culture and the history of the city in a place that transcends the gastronomic to become a symbol of identity and Cuban-ness.

“Mi mojito en la Bodeguita” es el fragmento de una frase que solía repetir el escritor Ernest Hemingway en la época en que vivió en La Habana, al referirse a la bebida que se servia en 'La Bodeguita del Medio', un lugar emblemático de La Habana Vieja, conocido por ser uno de los referentes de la comida criolla tradicional de Cuba.
Este local convertido en un restaurante muy visitado se encuentra a pocos pasos de la Plaza de la Catedral, en la calle Empedrado, una de las cuatro que atraviesan esta famosa plaza colonial. Al llegar desde el Puerto de La Habana y caminar por esta calle tenemos una vista encantadora de la Plaza Colonial. Esta zona es exclusivamente peatonal, entre los adoquines de la calle hay pequeños cañones empotrados que señalan la prohibición de entrada a vehículos.
En esta época del año las calles del casco histórico se llenan de turistas, y esta área es una de las más visitadas dentro de los recorridos turísticos que se dan en La Habana Vieja, por eso en sus alrededores encontramos siempre muchos visitantes extranjeros.
A un costado de la Plaza está la siempre concurrida Bodeguita del Medio, la que comenzó como un modesto establecimiento donde se vendían productos básicos que con el tiempo fue ampliándose y ganando identidad gracias a su ubicación estratégica y al creciente flujo de personas que acudían al establecimiento. Su sello se consolidó con la comida criolla que allí se ofrecía, y actualmente también es celebre por el Mojito, uno de los cócteles más emblemáticos de Cuba y un sello distintivo del lugar.
El nombre del local se debe a su ubicación, justo en el medio de la cuadra, en Empedrado entre San Ignacio y Cuba. En aquella época lo común era que las bodegas se encontraran en las esquinas, por lo que esta fue bautizada popularmente como “la bodeguita del medio”, denominación que su dueño terminó inmortalizando.
A lo largo de los años el sitio ha recibido la visita de innumerables personalidades de las artes, las letras, la política y el deporte. Sus paredes son una prueba de ello ya que están cubiertas de firmas y dedicatorias las que se superponen unas sobre otras al punto de que en ocasiones han debido pintarse nuevamente para dar espacio a nuevas rúbricas. Cada cliente que pasa por allí tiene la oportunidad de dejar su huella y esto es igualmente cautivador.
Los alrededores son siempre alegres, donde se escucha la música tradicional cubana que muchas veces se toca en vivo. En la calle el arte se muestra en cada rincón ya que en varios lugares hay puntos de venta de cuadros, artesanías, y suvenires. Todo este ambiente rodeado de la arquitectura colonial que caracteriza las calles de La Habana.
Es por eso que visitar esta calle y La Bodeguita del Medio no es solo disfrutar de sus cocteles y la sabrosa comida, sino vivir toda una experiencia con la cultura y la historia de la ciudad en un sitio que trasciende lo gastronómico para convertirse en símbolo de identidad y cubania.
