Hello everyone, it's creative-sunday and I'm participating for the first time. Today, I want to share a recipe of "Thin Dal/Patla Dal", this is my mom's recipe. We usually have Dal with steamed rice. There are two kinds of Dal one is thick and another is thin. I'm going to share the recipe of the thin Dal which is kind of a runny or soup-like lentil dish.
The ingredients;
3 Green chilly
1 garlic clove (finely minced)
1 Onion slit in two pieces
½ teaspoon cumin seeds
Coriander
4 cup of soybean oil (use bottle cups)
1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
1 liter Water
Step by step
Step 1: Wash the Dal it's important to wash it properly. So in a bowl take dal and 3–4 times wash it with fresh water until the water becomes transparent.
Step 2: Cook the Dal

Take a cooker or a cooking pot and add 1 liter of water.

Then add the dal in the cooker with water and wait for 3-4 minutes
Use half of the onion while cooking the dal and reserve the remaining half for the tempering later. Slice it into thin pieces and add it into the Dal.

After that add 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder.

As per taste add some salt

Then you can cut the green chilly or directly add three pieces into it.

Boil over medium-high heat. As it starts boiling, skim off any foam that rises to the surface.

Reduce the heat to low for 20 minutes, then you should check if the Dal is soft yet, then you take a wooden stick, stir the dal lightly crushing the lentils as they soften.
Step 3: Adjust the Consistency
Add another ½–1 cup of hot water if the dal seems too thick because this is not a thick Dal recipe. The consistency should be similar to a light soup.
Step 4: Prepare the Tempering (Tadka)

Then take another small pan, if u have two stoves then it's better. In the small pan add soybean oil 4 times, use the bottle cup to measure. Keep it over medium heat.

Then instantly add cumin seeds as the amount shown in the picture, let them sizzle for 15–20 seconds until fragrant.

Keep adding the ingredients do not waste time, add the other half of the onion we had kept, make sure it's chopped.

Then add the garlic which was minced earlier.

And fry for 3-4 minutes, stirring regularly until soft and they must look lightly golden or a bit black but don't cook for too long it might taste bitter.
Step 5: mix it all

Pour the hot tempering directly into the cooked dal, keep stirring.

In the end when you see it's enough boiled then as per taste add some coriander and cook for another 20–30 seconds. Stir immediately to distribute the flavors evenly. Also, adjust seasoning if needed.
Step 6: Final stage
You need to let the dal simmer gently for another 3–5 minutes so the flavors can blend together.

Ta-da! finally it's done, your thin Dal is ready for serving. You can sense a delicious aroma in the kitchen.

So you can serve this hot dal with steamed rice. And before you judge, this dal is intentionally light and thin, it's so clear you could probably see your reflection in it.
I think it is easy to make for everyday meal. It's simple yet a flavorful broth. You can also try to drink it directly as it's way too thin. Anyway, it's Bangladeshi-styled patla dal recipe.
