It's easy for me to leave my house and walk down my everyday streets, finding those spaces that have a certain implicit harshness, a kind of complex reality that constructs them. That's when the word “dystopia” comes to mind, because my late father sometimes used it to describe my predilection for taking photographs of those spaces where the world seems to have failed...

Es algo fácil para mi, salir de mi casa y adentrarme en mis calles de a diario, y encontrar esos espacios que tienen una cierta dureza implícita, una especia de realidad compleja construyéndolos. Entonces es cuando la palabra "Distopia" se viene a mi mente, pues mi difunto Padre la utilizaba para definir algunas veces mi cierta predilección por hacer fotografías de esos espacio en donde el mundo parece haber fallado...

My father was a man who enjoyed the finer things in life, including beautiful views, whether natural or urban landscapes. So he often disagreed with my attraction to photographic subjects based on photos like the ones I am sharing with you here today. In fact, my father, who loved art and especially painting, used to call some of his painter friends “ Dystopia Apostles,” long before I started taking photos. In addition to being an eternal lover of what he called “the good things in life” (a phrase that encompassed everything from good whiskey to good food and good art), Dad also had an excellent and sharp sense of humor, and on one occasion he said something like, “You're the only guy I know who, when visiting Versailles, would probably end up taking a picture of the sewage drain” 😂... What a joke!...

Papá era un hombre a quien le gustaban las cosas bonitas de la vida y esto incluía las visiones hermosas ya fuese de paisajes naturales como urbanos. Así que con frecuencia discrepaba con el hecho de que yo encontrara atractiva la temática fotográfica basada en fotos como estas que estoy compartiendo hoy aquí con ustedes. De hecho mi Padre, quien amaba el arte y en especial la pintura, solía llamar también "apóstoles de la distopia" a algunos de sus amigos pintores, mucho tiempo antes de que yo comenzara a hacer fotos. Y además de un enamorado eterno de eso que el llamaba "las cosas buenas de la vida" (frase que abarcaba desde el buen whisky hasta la buena comida y el buen arte), Papá también tenía un excelente y filoso sentido del humor y en una ocasión me dijo algo como: "Eres el único tío que conozco quien visitando Versalles, seguramente terminaría haciendo una foto en el desagüe de las aguas negras" 😂... ¡Vaya chiste!...

The truth is that I live in a place where, in 1999, the census recorded 35,000 inhabitants, and today it is estimated that fewer than 15,000 people remain living in the municipality. So, in a way, that says that things are not going very well in this place, and that is why I can go out into the streets and come face to face with scenes like the ones in this publication. So that, at least for me, is also a kind of “symbiosis” between my passion for photography and taking advantage of everything around me to do this...

Lo cierto es que vivo en un lugar en donde en el año 1999 el censo era de 35.000 habitantes y hoy por se estima que sean menos de 15.000 las personas que permanecen viviendo en el municipio. Así que de alguna manera eso dice que en este lugar las cosas no están yendo del todo bien y es debido a eso que puedo salir a las calles y encontrarme frente a frente con escenas como estas en esta publicación. Así que eso, cuando menos para mi, es también una especie de "simbiosis" entre mi pasión por hacer fotografías y el aprovechar todo en mi entorno para hacer esto...

_{ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7}
