Edges of Light, Street Photography - Monomad Challenge.

Edges of light_20251220_152826_0000.png

This is undoubtedly my favorite subject to photograph. Those edges of light are extremely appealing to me, creating a contrast between shadows and light that you can usually find in two settings: in alleys or at sunset when the sun begins to set. It's all about being in the right place at the right time when the sunlight can draw lines and shapes on the concrete or even on some walls of buildings or houses.

This way, you will achieve very cinematic scenes and, if you want and have a lot of patience, something minimalist in the style of Fan-Ho.

Here is my latest series on this theme, photos taken in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

I should also mention that this is like hunting, lying in wait and hoping that something will happen right on those edges of light. I usually wait for something or someone to pass by, an animal, a person, or if there is an object spontaneously covered by that ray of light. But not everything is natural. Obviously, I make some adjustments in post-production in Lightroom. I create a little more shadow and lower the lighting levels, creating a little more contrast between the background and the edge of light.

What I manage to achieve most are the corners, which is where the light rests, especially when it comes to avenues, although all this varies depending on the day, the time, and how the urban layout, streets, and buildings are structured.

Have you ever tried this type of photography? You can even do it with a phone, and I assure you that you will get very different and interesting results. It's just a matter of playing with the light and the scene. Photography is light, and if you combine it with a little creativity, you will achieve wonderful things.

I hope you liked all this, and if you have a favorite, let me know in the comments :)

Have you ever tried this type of photography?

Yes I did. A long time ago (end of 80s, early 90s) - way before digital camaras were invented - I used to play around with photographing a little, to try and develop those myself. Always B/W. Mostly tried high contrast still images since I liked them the most when being in the lab 'pushing' the shot onto photographic paper. Not that I was good at it, but have seen some interesting results.

Palermo Buenos Aires rings not only a bell for me, but have some nice memories of that - little - district. Must have been 2007 or something when I visited the city and this district. We hardly left Palermo when we stayed their for around a week or so. Great times.

It's great what you mentioned about photography back then, and it's also nice that you visited Palermo; it's a lovely district.

Thank you so much for the kind comment, appreciation, and for sharing your experience :)
