Khanom Tokiao (ขนมโตเกียว)
Hello, friends! Today, we’re making Khanom Tokyo together!. 😊 Most Thai people have definitely tried this dessert or at least seen street vendors cooking it fresh on the griddle hot, fragrant, and irresistible.
Khanom Tokyo is a popular Thai street food made of thin, crepe like pancakes grilled on a flat top, then rolled with sweet or savory fillings. Classic options include sausage, minced pork, pork floss, quail eggs, or sweet creams like custard or matcha. You’ll spot these at roadside carts, night markets, or food festivals across Thailand.
The best part? It’s super easy to make! Enjoy it piping hot for that perfect crispiness and aroma. My version is lightly sweetened, just how I love it and I’m excited to share the steps below. Let’s get cooking! 😄
Ingredients
Tokyo flour recipe
- 120 grams of all-purpose wheat flour
- 15 grams of rice flour
- 40 grams of sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 4 grams of baking powder
- Baking soda 1/2 tsp
- Plain fresh milk, 125 ml.
- Rice bran oil 20 grams
- 1 egg
- Vanilla scent 1 tsp
Filling as desired
- I used Foi Thong filling and strawberry jam
Instructions
STEP 1. Prepare the batter
- In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, rice flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
- Add eggs, rice bran oil, vanilla extract, and half of the plain fresh milk. Mix until smooth.
- Pour in the remaining milk and stir until fully combined.
- Cover the bowl and let the batter rest for 15–20 minutes.
(Note: Adding the milk in two batches helps create a smooth batter without lumps.)
STEP 2. Cook the pancakes
Heat a flat-bottomed pan over low heat until very hot.
Scoop about 1 ladle of batter and pour it into the center of the pan. Spread it into a thin, round circle.
Cook until the batter sets.
STEP 3. Add filling & roll
- Place your prepared filling on the pancake, then roll it up (as shown in the reference image). Transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly.
STEP 4. Repeat & storage
Continue the process until all the batter is used (keep the heat low and the pan hot).
If there’s leftover batter, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Freshly made Khanom Tokiao incredibly fragrant with a crispy texture, they’re delicious when eaten right away. Even if they cool down and the outer layer softens, they’re still tasty in a different way. Pair them with a hot cup of tea or coffee for a perfect match. 😊
