Tried to Cook Pork Broth Soup, But It Didn’t Go as Planned

Happy Sunday Hivers!

I’ve started cooking dishes that can no longer be considered simple. For me, the easy and basic ones are fried fish, boiled eggs, fried eggs, hotdogs, and so on. But now, I’m beginning to cook dishes that are a bit more challenging, those that need proper timing.

Two days ago, I cooked pork broth soup. Since my mother had something to take care of outside the house, she left me alone in the kitchen. When I was younger, I used to get excited about cooking, but as I mentioned before, I’ve always struggled with seasoning and getting the perfect timing. My mom always tells me that cooking requires proper timing.

After preparing all the ingredients, I started boiling water and added the pork meat. After it began to boil, I added the taro, thinking it would need a longer time to soften.

I let it boil for a few minutes and checked if the meat had softened, but even after 10 minutes, it still wasn’t tender yet. So I continued boiling it. After a few more minutes, the taro had already become very soft, and the broth had turned sticky. When I checked the meat again, it still wasn’t tender, so I added more water because I was worried the soup would dry up, then let it boil again.

After the meat had become tender, I added the Chinese pechay. When I told my mom, I couldn’t help but laugh at the result of my cooking. When she checked it, she added some water because the broth had become too sticky.

My mom commented that the taste was fine and it was actually delicious, but I got the timing wrong. She said I should have waited until the meat was already tender before adding the taro. Once the taro was became tender, that’s when I should have added the Chinese pechay. I added the taro too early, and that’s where I missed the timing.

Although I didn’t make it perfect, at least we were able to eat it and nothing went to waste. I laughed about it with my mom, saying that cooking really isn’t for me. She replied, ‘Just keep practicing, and you’ll eventually get the timing right.’ Wow, I have such a great mentor, she’s full of optimism!

Wow that's another way of cooking foods @kellyane. It was like "Sometimes, I cook better than I can" cooking. Because cooking what we usually know or too simple is boring so we have to add some challenge from time to time to let our skills and cooking journey flow. Pork broth soup is actually a favorite of mine when it comes to soup, as we always cook it every rainy season. The warmth just give us feeling of comfort and safety. Thanks for sharing this dearest.
