Too Much of Anything is Poisonous

Happy Monday Hivers!

Last week, my mother was craving Sinuglaw, a popular dish in the Visayas. The name comes from two words: "sinugba" (grilled) and "kinilaw" (raw fish cured in vinegar). In simple terms, it is a combination of grilled pork and kinilaw-style fish mixed together.

The dish is usually prepared with plenty of vinegar, onions, ginger, cucumber, and chili peppers, creating a flavorful blend of smoky, tangy, and spicy tastes. It is a well-loved delicacy in our region, and for us, it is truly delicious.

Since my mother was craving this dish, she went to the market and bought all the necessary ingredients. When she arrived home, we immediately started preparing the Sinuglaw. The amount of fish and pork was actually quite small, but once we added the cucumber and other spices, the dish became much larger.

The large bowl was completely filled with the Sinuglaw we prepared. We had it for lunch, and since there were still leftovers, we ate it again for dinner and even for breakfast the next day. Because of that, I can honestly say that we ended up eating quite a lot of Sinuglaw.

After the next day, I never thought that my mother would end up in the hospital.

Early Saturday morning, before we went to our garden, she complained that her stomach was aching. She said it was still tolerable, so I did not think much of it. I went ahead to the garden while she stayed at home to drink some warm water. After a few minutes, she followed me there.

As usual, we started doing our gardening tasks, pulling weeds, trimming plants, and checking on our crops. While I was weeding, I suddenly heard my mother say that she felt nauseous. She quickly ran toward a guava tree and held onto it. She looked very pale, and when I touched her, her body felt unusually cold.

We immediately brought her back home. As soon as we arrived, she vomited twice. I started to panic because her stomach was aching, and after the third time she vomited, I told her that we should go to the hospital. However, she refused. After that, she stopped vomiting, but from morning until evening, she mostly slept. She barely ate or drank anything and became very weak.

The next day, she was still weak, but she continued refusing to go to the hospital. She only ate and drank small amounts. On the third day, we finally decided to bring her to the hospital because she had become extremely weak from not eating properly and drinking very little water.

When we arrived at the hospital, she was given medication for hyperacidity through an injection. After a few minutes, she finally felt hungry again. Several laboratory tests were conducted, and thankfully, no bacteria were found in her stomach. According to the doctor, the problem was caused by excessive stomach acid, which explained her condition. The doctor also mentioned that the Sinuglaw may have triggered it.

This experience reminded us that even something we enjoy eating can cause problems when consumed in excess. We may think it is harmless at the moment, but sometimes the effects only appear later. That is why moderation is important because too much of anything, even our favorite food, can have consequences we never expected.

Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!

Oh my, i'm just glad nagpadala din sya sa hospital in the end. If she vomit a lot and with lil food she eaten, baka naman ma dehydrate sya. How is she na by the way?

She's ok now @ruffatotmeee. After she was discharged, she was able to finish her food, her appetite was back to normal. Thanks for asking.
