Happy Thursday Hivers!
Currently, the Philippines is experiencing a moderate El Niño, and we are already starting to feel its effects. Water has become more scarce in our area, as the flow has noticeably weakened. We can also feel the intense heat, and our plants are already being greatly affected by the dry and hot weather.
However, not all parts of the Philippines are experiencing the same conditions. While our area in the Visayas is already dealing with extreme heat and water shortages, some parts of Luzon are experiencing the opposite, with heavy rains and flooding.
The weather conditions can vary greatly across the country, and here in the Visayas, the effects of the heat are becoming more noticeable every day.
Because of this, we decided to have our own water connection installed so we wouldn’t have to keep manually fetching water for the plants. Now that we have a reliable water supply, we no longer have to limit the amount of water we give them. We can water them generously to help them survive the extreme heat.
Our sweet potato plants, unfortunately, have already started to die because they couldn’t withstand the intense heat and lack of water. However, some of them managed to survive. After we had the water connection installed, we made sure to give them plenty of water to help them recover and hopefully save them from dying completely.
It may seem like a simple change, but having our own water connection has made a big difference in caring for our garden, especially during this extremely hot and dry season.
For the new crops we recently planted, such as spinach and red bell peppers, we are very happy with how well they are growing. They are protected from the intense heat by the trees around them, which provide much-needed shade and shelter from the scorching sun.
Another advantage is that when we planted these crops, we already had our own water supply. Because of this, we were able to give them enough water regularly without worrying too much about conserving water. I’m really thankful that despite the extreme heat, our spinach and red bell pepper plants are still growing well and looking healthy and beautiful.
Even though the weather is extremely hot, it will not stop us from continuing to plant. At the moment, we are also building garden beds since we now have enough soil that we got from my uncle’s place.
We have already started sowing seeds such as pak choy, eggplant, and other vegetables that we plan to grow in these garden beds.
We may be facing extreme heat and water challenges, but we won’t let these stop us from growing. We’re hopeful that with proper care and patience, our garden will continue to thrive
