For our second batch of lettuce, we decided to plant two different varieties. Actually, I’m not very familiar with the different types of lettuce, so I’m not exactly sure what varieties these are. What we planted this time are one green variety and one purple variety.
As they started growing, I found myself appreciating the purple variety more. I really liked how its leaves grew closely together, giving it a fuller and more compact appearance. The green variety, on the other hand, had leaves that were more spread out and grew farther apart.
After a month of transplanting, we were finally able to harvest our second batch of lettuce. We didn’t have any difficulty finding buyers because many people had already reserved some while the lettuce was still growing. Once the lettuce was ready for harvest, we simply contacted those who had placed their reservations.
Today, we finally harvested the lettuce and delivered them directly to those who had reserved them. It feels rewarding to see how something we planted and cared for has now made its way to other people’s tables.
One of the things I’ve learned from farming is that you also need to have an entrepreneurial mindset. It’s not enough to simply know how to plant and grow crops, you also need to know how to sell them. That way, whatever goes beyond what your family can consume can be sold instead of going to waste.
It’s truly rewarding to see that, aside from being able to enjoy the fruits of our labor, we were also able to sell some of our harvest and earn extra income. There’s something really satisfying about knowing that the food we planted and cared for not only provided something for our family but also became a source of additional income.
Last week, my mom started sowing seeds for our third batch of lettuce, again with two different varieties. This time, the seeds came all the way from Canada, which makes us even more excited to see how they will grow. So far, they haven’t sprouted yet, but we’re patiently waiting.
By next week, we’ll probably be busy again changing the soil in the pots to give the plants healthier and more suitable growing conditions. We’re hoping that our upcoming third batch of lettuce will grow well and give us another beautiful and abundant harvest.
