Hello everyone! 🌿 I’m excited to share a little story about our backyard farm, especially about our kamias tree. My husband planted it right after our wedding because he really wanted us to live here one day. At that time, we weren’t able to settle here yet because of work in the corporate world. But after the pandemic, we decided to fully pursue life here in our little farm, and it has been such a blessing.

Every year, our kamias tree gives lots of fruit. Kamias, called tree sorrel in english, is a very sour green fruit from Southeast Asia. In some parts of the Philippines, it is also called “iba”. Its sour taste is perfect for Filipino dishes like pinaksiw, sinigang, making jams, or even eating with salt.

Last February, our tree started flowering, and now the fruits are fully grown. I’m so happy to see its progress. Every morning, my little one runs straight to the tree after waking up, so excited to see the fruits she has been looking and exciting for. It’s a happy to witness her joy as she sees the flowers turn into actual fruits she can enjoy.

Yesterday, my husband caught some tilapia from our small fishpond, and I decided to cook it pinaksiw style. To make it even more special, I picked some kamias from the tree to use as the souring ingredient.

First, I prepared the fish with a bit of seasoning and onion, ginger, garlic then added the sliced kamias while cooking. The aroma of the tilapia simmering with the fresh kamias filled our home it smelled so inviting!

When it was time to eat, I was amazed at how much I could eat. The tangy flavor of the kamias perfectly complemented the fish, making it so fresh and delicious. I smile seeing my family enjoy the meal, knowing it came straight from our backyard.

It’s moments like these that make me grateful for our farm life. Growing our own food, seeing it flourish year after year, and being able to turn it into meals for the family is truly fulfilling. The kamias tree, small as it may seem, has become a symbol of joy for our little family.

Tilapia fish usually give a lot of generation in the pond. I am very happy that you had a wonderful time, especially the interesting morning. But the fresh fruits of the garden are really very interesting. Thanks for sharing
