I have had several bad experience with food hunting recently, I posted one of them a couple days ago. However there were others that I chose not to post because I just hate it. However food hunting is exciting, especially if you have a certain goal like I do... To get a cheap food lol.
Yesterday I had a cheap lunch below $1 USD, or in my local currency it was below 16.800 rupiah. I run a frugal live for more than 5 years, so it is not a hard thing to do for me. Sometime It can go wrong and maybe I should not say sometime, but often...
Ok why do I call it food hunting anyway... Because there are two kind of cheap food. The first one is cheap because they sell it cheap. The second one is cheap because they have price cut, whether due to promotion or they just want to dump their stock before the raw material become expired or rotten.
This time is a combination of both, because in general the place I pick sell cheap food but not below $1. It is famima, which we call it as for Family Market, a chain convenience store from Japan. They are well known and in hype of selling ready to go food.
Recently they create these Bento Meal set. You can see the real price there, 18.000 rupiah, or about 1.07 USD, defeinitely above $1. Their chicken katsu is higher too. I am curious how their taste are, but of course as a frugal or super stingy person, I do not wish to buy them lol.
However yesterday was different. They had that promotional sale which gave around 10% price reduction. So it means there were a couple of them which had below $1 price. So that offer got my attention and I decided to get one of them.
This was I got, a Bento Set B. A shrimp roll, a couple of egg rolls and a salad with thousand island dressing. For a dollar, I think this is not a cheap one. It is not an expensive one, but more like a decent price.
Why it was not a cheap one, because the rolls were like this. They were tiny, even my finger are bigger than them. So literally I was eating white rice there lol.
Another complain I could deliver here was the salad. it was god damn cold as if I was eating a soft cream right from the freezer. Those salad was not meant to be hot or warm, but atleast they should not be as cold as an ice cream.
Now the good side, I could say the taste was excellent. There is a famous bento chain restaurant here, Hoka Hoka Bento. They are the standard for taste of all Japanese bento meal here in Jakarta. Compared to them, Hoka Hoka Bento is still better, but the price is about 3x of this one.
There are many other smaller local bento sellers, if you compare this Famima Bento to them, I would say this Famima Bento is better. The problems are just the portions and the cold salad, other than that they are great.
So finally today I could share something more positive here. I do not know how bento meals are sold in your place, maybe you could share a bit about them in the comment section below.
