Hello Asean Hive Community
First of all, I want to say "HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026" to all Asean Hive readers here. This is my first for Asean Hive Community in 2026 so I think it is not too outdated to say the happy new year here.
My family has an odd custom for the new year eve. We rarely went out to see fireworks or others. We usually gather together in house and watching TV together for the countdown lol.
There is another custom too. We used to eat noodles during the year change, right on the midnite. We had eaten spaghettis, udon, ramen, instant noodles and many more. However the recent years especially after the Covid, we only ate Soba.
Soba is Japanese buckwheat noodle. The reason is simple, we believe that it is the healthiest among all the noodles we usually eat. They can come in hot brooth or with a cold dipping sauce. We had it both in rotation.
This is a post from new year eve 2025. We had the hot brooth soba, with some fish cake and spring onion. A simple dish we made just to symbolized continuity and longetivity.
The 2026 New Year Eve
These were what we had prepared for the new year eve. It might be the hardest new year eve for my mom because that night was the first new year eve she had to experience without my late father.
I had let go my late father and I could only pray he found peace and happiness in his after life. But I am a guy anyway, woman will think and react differently. It will never be easy to spend the day alone that she used to have it together with someone for fifty years.

The table was a messy one, we did not arrange properly because it's only two of us there. This was the cold dipping soba, as you could see the soba or buckwheat noodle was in the middle.
The left part was nori cuts (seaweeds) some shredded omelet and a flask of dipping sauce. The pinky small container was spring onion cuts. We used to cut spring onions then store them in freezer.
The top right table was my late father chair. It was empty, my mom prepared it empty so that's how I knew she had not fully let him go.

The right side were the extra condiments. The left part was grilled chicken breast with black pepper. Although the name was grilled chicken, we cooked those cuts in pan. The taste of course was not as good as the real grilled one, there was no smokey favor at all. However overall the taste was still good.
The right part was boiled octopus legs in soy soup. My mom loved octopus but she could not accept the fact that she could no longer eat those octopus due to her age. But still, she often made octopus dish.

And this was what I had that night in one shot. I did not use the dipping bowl because I did not want to end up washing to many things in the kitchen. So I just pour them all into one bowl there.
This was My family odd custom during the new year eve. It was not flashy, but we had it for years.
Ok that's my new year celebration story here. Feel free to leave any comment and thanks for coming here.
Thank you for coming and reading my post. I live in Jakarta, Ex-Capital City of Indonesia. I used to live by making money online, that's why I like being here, on HIVE, and in #PIMP - (Paper In My Pocket) community.
