Hello Asean Hive Community
The weather has been terrible for the last few days, I just recovered from a nasty flue, but not yet in full condition. I hope you are doing fine, I mean not sick like me last week.
Ok what to post today... I love food so I will continue to share my food story here. What do I eat when I am run out of money? Well it is Indomie!!! My favorite instant noodle, cheap and super delicious!
But that's not the case for this post. Instant noodle has high salt content so I can not eat that everyday for lunch and dinner. Most of the time I have to be wise in getting the right food in the right budget.
So here is a tip from me if you are in Indonesia and want to do the frugal living style in dining LoL. Come to Warung Nasi or Warung Tegal, it stands for RICE HUT. It is a food stall which sell very affordable meal.
Usually they present their food in a display, or behind a glass wall like that. It is a traditional fast food style, they cook everything and put those dishes on the small trays, plate and sometime container. If you don't know what it is, you just point your finger and ask the server what it is.
You can ask the price too, but it will be confusing for you because sometime they give the price based on their guts. So different people can be charge different price even they eat the same thing. So most of the RICE HUT like this, although the price is very affordable, they do not have the fix price, so everything is subjective.
Usually they put the price only on certain item, such as fried chicken, fried egg, fishes, and other main dish. In other words vegetables and small side dishes are not. You can not pick your veggies, soup, or small side dish by yourself, it is prune for being charged as a double portion. So ask the server to scope them for you.
So let me show you my lunch here, it is one of the most popular cheap combination everywhere around the Indonesia.
Any dish with an egg as the main dish is considered the cheapest of all. There is another cheaper, like you just order rice and vegetable, but you will end up getting a hostile reaction from the server or the outlet owner LoL. So trust me, if you want to buy the cheapest, buy the egg. Don't push your luck too far, you don't want to have your plate getting spitted when you don't look at it.
Egg is the cheapest, it doesn't matter whether it is a boiled round egg, an omelet like this, or just a sunny side up. All are the same. I like omelet, however it is the most cheated egg in all Rice Hut. You can check the first picture of this post, do you see any boiled egg or sunny side up one?
This is what people like to do with omelet. They break 5 eggs, mix them together by adding some spring onion, chili cuts, and any other spice, then from the mixture, they make 6 to 8 round omelet. So that omelet is actually not a whole egg.
Some even cheat more than this. They at some flour or dough into the egg mixture, then they make at least twice from the number of the eggs. The dough will make the omelet inflate, and making it bigger and thicker. When you eat, you know well it is not a pure egg LoL
This is my side dish, a cube cut of tempeh or soy cake. We call this as orek, a stirfried tempeh with soy sauce. This is why I say you should ask the server to scope it for you, because there is no proper portion for this side dish. If you are a adorable hunk and the server gets a crush by seeing you, you might get more than twice than I have here.
This is the last one, vegetable. What kind of this is this? can you guess?
This is a cap cay, it is an Indonesian-Chinese stir-fried vegetable dish. There is no rule about the recipe, basically it is a mix of vegetables, stir-fried in a savory garlic-based sauce.
Mine here is so little, because when you ask for a veggie, the server scopes a little for you and it is a complimentary. So they charge none for this, and this is another reason why you should the server to scope it for you.
How much does it cost me? Well this plate costs me 12.000 Rupiah, or less than $0.8. This is the basic meal you can get with minimum price, and the nutrition is actually on a good balance. You get have a mix vegetable, a soy cake and an egg. That is good, isn't?
Ok that's for my budget egg meal. see you next time
Thank you for coming and reading my post. I live in Jakarta, Ex-Capital City of Indonesia. I used to live by making money online, that's why I like being here, on HIVE, and in #PIMP - (Paper In My Pocket) community.
