We have a place about an hour away from where I live that is called Black Rock. It's a small regional chain and their whole deal is that you can cook your own steak on a screaming hot rock. It's a cool concept, but I quickly realized the drawbacks after going there once. I think it's worth doing it once, but I would never do the cook your own steak thing again at a place like this. While my family was happily enjoying their meal, I was sitting there fiddling with my meat :) I think I finally finished a good fifteen minutes after everyone else was already done.

well one person at our table kind of was the grill chief because they were closest. I felt bad for her after a while because we were all chowing down but she had a job to do
Yeah, that would be tough even though it might make the most sense. You probably wouldn't want someone else reaching across the table and burning themselves or starting a fire! I'd totally go back to the place I mentioned before again, but I wouldn't do the cook your own protein route. It's pretty rare (pun intended) that I can find a steak better at a restaurant than I can grill myself at home. I mostly don't even bother anymore.
