It has been crazy hot in the Eastern States of Australia these last couple of days... as in catastrophic fire risk hot... 45 degrees outside, and windy as all hell... and there have been large fires that have taken out homes in the rural areas.
We had to do a 8 hour drive on one of these days... and it was incredible... I was worried about pushing the car too hard in the heat, and we also had to have a detour around one of these large fires. It was pretty okay inside the car, but as soon as we jumped out for breaks or for lunch... yep 44-45 degrees immediately in the face! And with the wind, it felt like the end of the world had arrived...
... and it was the first heatwave for my kids... its funny, when we were living in the Netherlands, 30-35 was considered a heatwave, and they would be all stretched out groaning... but somehow, when it hits this high... you run for shelter and just grit your teeth and bear it.
When we got home... it was the evening, and we immediately went around watering everything as we had been away for a while. Some of the new grass had to be watered, mostly it was around the edges where it had started dying back... but mostly it was doing pretty fine! And the veggies in their self-watering containers were doing okay if a little bit sun-burnt.
... but these blueberry bushes were suffering a bit, as they were still relatively new!

... and on the front part, even these Australian native bushes were feeling the heat quite badly. Two of three were tolerably okay, but this particular one had started drying out and dying back on the top! So, all of them got a strong dose of water from a can... and then I went around doing similar things for the other plants in the garden... even the natives!
And we are just popping out in the day for 10-15 minute sprints of hanging out washing and little things... any more than that and it is going to be just too hot! Thankfully our cooling is working inside, and our house is pretty good at staying mostly cool even without it. But even so, 44 degrees outside will eventually find its way inside!

... anyway, it was a good time to start harvesting the carrots as well. The tops had already started to flower, and the tops were starting to poke out as well. And apparently that is the time to pull them up! I don't think we will do carrots again... not much food for the amount of space that it takes up... there was a suggestion from a relative that we do potatoes in one of the buckets. He said that it just keeps propagating itself over and over through the seasons... so, maybe we should do that, we do like our potatoes and we can spare one of the buckets to be potato only!
