Friends of #HiveDiy, let’s create a space just for us, free from responsibilities and routines. To take a break from the daily grind, from work, from home, from the kids, and from our partners. Alone with our tools, dedicating ourselves to creating and working on craft projects. In doing so, we’re helping and doing our part to improve the environment. Algunas personas a estas “alturas del partido”, como decimos los venezolanos, no entienden ni han aprendido sobre la necesidad de proteger el medio ambiente y sobre las consecuencias negativas para el planeta, sobre todo con el grave problema de la escasez del vital líquido. Es prioritario proteger las fuentes de agua, embalses, manantiales y otros. Con pequeñas cosas que cada uno de nosotros haga, se puede colaborar y aportar para mejorar el entorno.
Hoy 5 de junio se celebra el Día Mundial del Ambiente y es necesario crear conciencia y proteger y cuidar el ambiente. Es un momento propicio para reflexionar, pues por muchos búnkeres que construyan algunos, las condiciones no están dadas y un colapso total arrastrará con todo y nadie se va a escapar de los efectos negativos de la contaminación, de la falta de oxígeno y del vital líquido. Es tiempo de que las personas dejen de bla…bla y actúen.
Les invito a no talar ni quemar, sobre todo en las fuentes de agua. Ya que necesitamos a los árboles como productores de oxígeno. También hay que evitar contaminar y producir tanta basura. Dejar de usar desodorantes, aerosoles e insecticidas.
Desde nuestros hogares se pueden hacer pequeñas iniciativas para colaborar, sobre todo las personas que, como yo, son apasionadas por las manualidades, el reciclaje, reutilizar y customizar. Amamos las tijeras, pistola de silicón, agujas, hilos y retazos de tela. Un mundo maravilloso donde aportamos por el medio ambiente y por nuestra salud mental. Pues, mientras hacemos proyectos manuales, liberamos hormonas de la felicidad y esto nos permite alcanzar el equilibrio y el bienestar.
A la vez que transformamos o creamos, ponemos un granito de arena para mejorar y minimizar el impacto de la contaminación y de la basura. Aunque algunos no lo crean, un retazo pequeño de tela se puede convertir en una obra de arte. A esto se le conoce como patchwork y mi técnica preferida es “El Jardín de la Abuela”. Para quienes se inician en este mundo de las manualidades y de la costura, y no conocen sobre el Jardín de la Abuela.
Les diré que es una técnica usada desde hace muchos años, desde tiempos de María Castañas, y consiste en hacer figuras con hexágonos. Según la página juanicavas.com:
”Aproximadamente en 1830, se acuña por primera vez el término Jardín de la Abuela. Este nombre se le da al patrón resultante de la aplicación de hexágonos en un quilt con telas combinadas cuidadosamente para crear la figura de flores…” Para más información visite aquí
Cuando hago proyectos con la técnica mencionada, me olvido de todos mis problemas, se pasa el tiempo y mi mente loquita se calla. Hacer diseños con los hexágonos es muy divertido. Actualmente, estoy incursionando y practicando otras técnicas para hacer flores de tela. La primera que rosa que hice se las dejé en la publicación anterior. Hoy los visito para traerles un nuevo proyecto que realicé con una rosa y caja de pizza.
Se preguntarán: ¿qué tienen en común? ¿Qué habrá inventado Mafa? Ya verán… Ya verán, no se adelanten. Pues, no lo inventé ni es de mi autoría. Hay varios tutoriales en Instagram y Facebook. Se trata de un colgante de pared. ¡Prepárense! Y acompáñenme a descubrir de qué se trata este proyecto y cómo se elabora un colgante de pared reutilizando cartón de una caja de pizza.

Some people, at this “stage of the game”—as we Venezuelans say—still don’t understand or haven’t learned about the need to protect the environment and the negative consequences for the planet, especially given the serious problem of water scarcity. Protecting water sources, reservoirs, springs, and other water bodies is a top priority. By doing small things each of us can do, we can contribute to improving the environment.
Today, June 5, is World Environment Day, and it is essential to raise awareness and protect and care for the environment. It is an opportune moment to reflect, for no matter how many bunkers some may build, the conditions are not right, and a total collapse will sweep everything away—no one will escape the negative effects of pollution, the lack of oxygen, and the scarcity of water. It is time for people to stop the empty talk and take action.
I urge you not to cut down or burn trees, especially near water sources. We need trees to produce oxygen. We must also avoid polluting and generating so much waste. Stop using deodorants, aerosols, and insecticides.
From our homes, we can take small steps to help, especially those of us who, like me, are passionate about crafts, recycling, reusing, and upcycling. We love scissors, hot glue guns, needles, thread, and fabric scraps. It’s a wonderful world where we contribute to the environment and our mental health. After all, as we work on craft projects, we release happiness hormones, and this helps us achieve balance and well-being.
As we transform or create, we do our part to improve things and minimize the impact of pollution and waste. Even though some people might not believe it, a small scrap of fabric can be turned into a work of art. This is known as patchwork, and my favorite technique is “Grandma’s Garden.” For those just starting out in the world of crafts and sewing who aren’t familiar with Grandma’s Garden, I’ll explain that it’s a technique that’s been used for many years, dating back to the time of María Castañas, and involves creating shapes using hexagons. When I work on projects using this technique, I forget all my problems, time flies by, and my restless mind finally quiets down. Creating designs with hexagons is a lot of fun. Right now, I’m experimenting with and practicing other techniques for making fabric flowers. I shared the first rose I made in my previous post. Today, I’m back to show you a new project I made using a rose and a pizza box.
You might be wondering: what do they have in common? What could Mafa have come up with? You’ll see… You’ll see—don’t jump to conclusions. Well, I didn’t invent it, and I didn’t come up with it myself. There are several tutorials on Instagram and Facebook. It’s a wall hanging. Get ready! Join me as we discover what this project is all about and how to make a wall hanging by repurposing cardboard from a pizza box.

El cartón de cajas de pizzas es muy versátil y con este se pueden realizar muchos proyectos de manualidades. Aproveché de utilizar la rosa que hice con tela de franela teñida. Hice un proyecto muy bonito reutilizando cartón de las cajas de pizza. Se trata de un colgante que está muy de moda y hay varios videos en Facebook e Instagram. Utilicé yute, cabuya, pompones, margaritas pequeñas y un pedazo de tela de dopiovelo morado.
Amo reclinarme en la mecedora en el porche a disfrutar de un tazón de café mientras hago mis manualidades y pienso qué es lo que voy a inventar. El café despierta mi creatividad.

Pizza box cardboard is very versatile, and you can use it for lots of craft projects. I decided to use the rose I made from dyed flannel fabric. I created a really pretty project by reusing pizza box cardboard. It’s a pendant that’s very trendy right now, and there are several videos of it on Facebook and Instagram. I used jute, cord, pom-poms, small daisies, and a piece of purple felt.
I love sitting back in the rocking chair on the porch, enjoying a cup of coffee while I work on my crafts and think about what I’m going to create next. Coffee sparks my creativity.

Paso 3: Seleccione la tela; escogí la tela de dopiovelo morado y la pegué con silicón caliente. Pegar bien por los lados.

Step 3: Choose the fabric; I chose the purple dopiovelo fabric and attached it with hot glue. Make sure to glue the sides securely.

Paso 4: Hice con 20 cm de cabuya el colgante. Pegue las dos tapas y coloque cabuya alrededor para tapar las imperfecciones.
Tips. Si desean, pueden acolchar con guata .

Step 4: I made the pendant using 20 cm of twine. Glue the two pieces together and wrap twine around them to cover any imperfections.

Paso 5: Peque la rosa grande en el medio, dos hojitas y florecitas pequeñas (margaritas). Como le faltaba brillo, le pegué pompones morados y plateados. Le hice un lazo de dopiovelo.
