Interesting thing about "Acting" in the organization where I work there is a long history of making people act as something before you get that title. For example right now we have an Acting CEO and and Acting Chief Information Officer. This means that these people are doing two jobs their previous job and they get paid for that title and their current job for which they are acting and not get paid for at all.
I must say it is a very frustrating experience as I was a Principal Software Engineer and an Acting Solutions Architect for over five years. That is very hard to do two jobs and getting paid for the lower title only lead to a lot of frustration. I thought many times about quitting and just getting a Solution Architect job elsewhere. That would mean an immediate pay boost, but I stuck it out and did what needed to be done as in two jobs. And now I am very content with it especially in the current environment in Tech where you can get reduction of force letter at any moment. My job is considered very stable, so there is that peace of mind... And I am finally not Acting but an official Solutions Architect. Though it did take over five years and a year long re-classification process with arguing my case in front of a panel and lots of paperwork.
