RE: This is Acting

in Reflectionslast month

Interesting thing about "Acting" in the organization where I work there is a long history of making people act as something before you get that title. For example right now we have an Acting CEO and and Acting Chief Information Officer. This means that these people are doing two jobs their previous job and they get paid for that title and their current job for which they are acting and not get paid for at all.

I must say it is a very frustrating experience as I was a Principal Software Engineer and an Acting Solutions Architect for over five years. That is very hard to do two jobs and getting paid for the lower title only lead to a lot of frustration. I thought many times about quitting and just getting a Solution Architect job elsewhere. That would mean an immediate pay boost, but I stuck it out and did what needed to be done as in two jobs. And now I am very content with it especially in the current environment in Tech where you can get reduction of force letter at any moment. My job is considered very stable, so there is that peace of mind... And I am finally not Acting but an official Solutions Architect. Though it did take over five years and a year long re-classification process with arguing my case in front of a panel and lots of paperwork.

That is a silly system!

A friend of mine who visited tonight is giving up two of his titles and retaining one, because he just hasn't the time to do all of the work involved. I am not sure if it comes with a pay cut, but one of the titles he is giving up is "head of finance" and he works for a large pharma company. Crazy he has three titles in that role.

And now I am very content with it especially in the current environment in Tech where you can get reduction of force letter at any moment.

The Us is pretty bad for employee protections, isn't it? Europe is generally pretty good in comparison I believe.

The employee protections in US is you can be given a box with your stuff and escorted out of the door at any moment for no cause. And you will get 2 weeks of pay.
