We all know that marriage is often presented as one of the biggest milestones in life to us, yet more people seem to be questioning it daily. Some are choosing to stay single, divorce rates remain a concern, and even among those who stay married, not everyone is genuinely happy

So what do you think is driving this change? Are people becoming more realistic about marriage, or are we simply becoming less willing to tolerate the things previous generations endured?

And honestly do you think some people are better off remaining single than getting married simply because society expects them to?

Sort:

For me, I believe the major problem is commitment. A successful marriage requires commitment of which most of us especially in this generation are not ready to give. We want the goodies and juices of marriage but we're not ready for the sacrifices

I think that's an important right word there, "commitment. People can genuinely want marriage while still being unwilling to do the difficult parts that make it work

And that's where the problem is. You can't enjoy what you fail to commit to.
You want a faithful partner but you're not ready to be faithful. Who does that?

It's like giving what you don't have and that is why we have a lot of failed marriages today.
Actually some does that 🤣😂

They do it o seriously and that's when you hear them say "men are polygamous in nature" as an excuse to their illicit acts

Do you think the problem is that people underestimate the sacrifices involved, or that they're simply less willing to make them?

I'm sure from my perspective that people are actually aware of the sacrifices involves but they are not willing to make them.
Who doesn't know that in a marriage, you are meant to stay true to your partner alone and forsake every other person outside

I like how you put this. Only few are ready to do the actual work. Some wants the marriage but don't want to give it all it takes

You get it. So when they see it's not working that way, they want to turn to baby papa or baby mama and walk out of the marriage

I also want to say that another thing I think of is that not everyone has the ability or capacity to go into marriage but then I'm still thinking, does it not still sums up on commitment?

I feel there's a difference between commitment and capacity. Someone can be fully committed but still lack the emotional maturity, communication skills, financial stability, self-awareness and other needed for marriage

Yeahh I think you're right. You might be willing to but the capacity is not there but maybe the capacity is what can be worked on sha

Anything can be worked on if the person wants it

Do you think commitment can compensate for those gaps, or does someone need the capacity first?

I think both can work hand in hand o. If you lack capacity, your commitment won't be showing
All you keep saying is you're trying but the best is not showing forth

That is just it right there. Hand in hand 💯

That's the sad reality of today, marriages of old are not the marriage we have in our today's world. People go into it for more crazier reasons and it's costing them more than they expected.

That is just the simple truth. A lot are not marrying for the purpose of it again. A lot of selfish reasons involved too

A sad truth, it is.
One I heard sometime ago is, his family is famous so I will become popular when I marry him. 😅

See rubbish and selfish reasons 🤣😂no love and other attributes. She's after fame

Maybe other attributes fit join na, who nose? 😂

Yes you're right. Those old people experienced things that could break them but because it was placed on selfless love

But do we still have that today

Like you will see marriages from old times celebrating 30 years, 50 year, you will be saying wow wow without researching or ask what and what was the hell they went through together and still stayed glued together

You can imagine, people of nowadays don't want to do the work but want to have marriage like those before them. The equation is not equating. 😂

I won't say they have become more realistic about marriage, it's really more of them not being willing to tolerate what comes with marraige. If only they understand what Marriage means and how it would benefit them, they will be willing and tolerating will be very bearable.

I get your point, but I think there's a difference between understanding what marriage requires and simply tolerating everything that comes with it. Some things require patience, while others shouldn't be tolerated at all. Where do you draw that line?

I guess having the knowledge of what Marriage requires is a first step to knowing if you can go through with it or not. Because if we look well, life teaches us what we may see in marriage through family, friends and strangers around us.

But that teaching doesn't mean the new marriage should be like that. In fact, it's better not to look at the marriage of others cos we humans tends to project what we see consciously or not

I didn't say look at marriage of others though, I'm saying you can learn from how you react to what people do to you, especially your loved ones. It's mostly what will happen in marriage, actions and reactions.

Having non negotiable on your own will be the line you can draw, I believe a lot of us know some of things we can not deal with by our capacity, watch out for them before marriage.

💯💯

Like a quote said, "If you're single, don't marry, nothing dey inside. If you're married, don't divorce, nothing dey outside". 😂
But the message I got from there and for your second question is, everybody will still decide what they want to do and which works best for them.

I saw the quote on someone's status recently🤣🤣😂but there's actually some truth in it. Marriage and singleness both come with their own struggles and benefits. Do you think people sometimes idealize whichever side they're not currently on?

I think so, it's very easy to have ideas than actual doing something so yeah, people will always idealize what they not experience yet. It's what we do with these ideas that matters.

💯💯

Even if some people are better off remaining single, there will always be the ones who will still go ahead and marry and cause another to face what they shouldn't inside the marriage. It's why it still go down to making a better choice in a marriage partner.

I agree that partner choice matters a lot. U can be committed & still end up in a marriage that constantly drains you because you chose poorly. But do you think people genuinely know how to identify a good partner before marriage, or do some things only become obvious afterward?

Many things become obvious afterward and that's why it can't be a perfect case of choosing the right partner. You just need to do some work in choosing the partner you want to do life with. Whatever comes after, you know you did choose him or her.

Hmmmm a very bitter fact. We have to endure or enjoy whatever consequences that follows our decisions or choices

Yeah, it's life for us. Even in other forms of decisions, it's our choices and so we live with what comes out of it.

But have you seen cases of right partner and they still have problems?

Lol there's nothing on this earth without problems, I thought that fact is clear enough. 😂
Choosing right only reduces the problems you could enter in marriage.

Marriage is just another type of contract.
