Yeah, it's the hardened plug from the inside of an old volcano. Over time the rest of the volcano has worn down and left the plug standing tall. :)
quite impressive. I've done an illustration of the mountain, and look at a lot of references, but never knew it had a plug that was so prominent. I would have liked to add that... oh well.
