Cinderella was one of my favorite fairy tales too. I also think that as children, we believed that kindness and hope could overcome everything and I think those stories shaped us in beautiful ways. The memory of your grandfather being Saint Nicholas is so heartwarming. It must have been such a special realization later in life.
I certainly loved stories—and it was even better if they had a happy ending where justice was served. Years after I found out my grandfather was the one who used to dress up as Santa—a cousin told me, and it made sense, given that he smelled like his cologne—discovering it was quite funny, and it remains a wonderful memory.
