Viral snacks always pique my curiosity. Recently, there’s been a buzz on social media about all kinds of risol. In fact, many places are selling them here now—there’s matcha risol, chocolate risol, red velvet risol, and more. The variety of these risol has me really curious; I want to try them but I’m afraid they might not suit my taste.

I was curious about one of the items they offer there, so I finally decided to make one of their most popular items: chocolate risol. As luck would have it, I already had chocolate spread at home, so it would be easier to make it at home. You can easily find the recipe for homemade chocolate spread in my previous post where I made roti kembong. You’ll find that the Homemade Chocolate Spread spread is incredibly easy to prepare.

Chocolate risol is a unique type of risol filled with chocolate spread and cheese and then deep-fried. What makes it interesting is the topping on the outer crust, made with flour and cocoa powder, which gives it an almost entirely even chocolate color.

Ingredients

10 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 egg
3 tablespoons tapioca flour
¼ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons powdered milk
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
Mineral water as needed
1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Instructions

Combine the all-purpose flour, tapioca flour, powdered milk, and cocoa powder.

Add the egg, salt, and granulated sugar, and stir until well combined.

Add water little by little while stirring with a whisk, making sure there are no lumps so the dough will be smooth later.

Once the consistency is right, heat a pan, add one ladleful of the batter, and spread it evenly in the pan.

Repeat until all the batter is used. Add the filling and topping later, once the wrappers have cooled slightly.

Topping Ingredients

70 grams of puff pastry dough
2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
100 grams of grated cheese
Chocolate spread, as needed

Topping Preparation Procedure

I make the chocolate breadcrumb topping by mixing the breadcrumbs and cocoa powder until evenly combined.

Then prepare the risol wrappers you’ve made, adding the chocolate and grated cheese. The dough must be tightly wrapped so it doesn’t break apart when fried.

Dip them in the batter—I intentionally set aside some of the dough for coating—then coat them in the chocolate breadcrumb mixture until fully covered.

Finally, fry the risoles until perfectly cooked, remembering to flip them over.

Serve while warm so that it melts in your mouth and tastes delicious; the outside is deliciously crispy and savory, and the sweetness of the crust is just right. This chocolate risol is truly delicious—the combination of chocolate and cheese blends perfectly.

I’m so happy to be able to make this dish at home—it’s a viral snack that’s a must-try. The kids absolutely love it because of the chocolate filling, especially the melted chocolate—the taste is truly irreplaceable.

What a fantastic initiative! There’s something deeply rewarding about turning that curiosity sparked by trends into a tangible, homemade experience. Sometimes, the fear that something ‘might not be to our taste’ is just a mental barrier preventing us from discovering new horizons, and you’ve decided to overcome it with creativity.

I find it admirable that you haven’t limited yourself to being a passive consumer of what the digital world dictates, but have taken the reins and created your own version. The combination of chocolate and cheese sounds daring, and the fact that you used your own chocolate cream recipe gives it an added value that no shop could replicate. Ultimately, cooking is a reflection of our lives: sometimes we must take a risk with new ingredients to discover that, even in the unexpected, we can find a delight that makes us smile.

Thank you for the best coment

This looks amazing! I love how you plated this.
We have something similar in Egypt called "koshary".
What's the secret ingredient in yours?

Thank you for dropping by, There’s no secret ingredient in the dough—it’s just like regular pancake batter, except it’s made as thin as possible
