For our first meal in Timotes, Mérida, we ate at the first place we found. The truth is that we had only had a light lunch that day, so by dinnertime we were really hungry. The closest option was a pizzeria; I know the ideal would have been a typical local dish, but that wasn’t the case.

Frattelo's Pizzeria is located near Plaza Bolívar in Timotes and has a very warm, family-friendly atmosphere. As soon as we walked in, the chill we were feeling disappeared. I really liked the wall decor featuring records and some kitchen utensils. They also sell cookies, polvorosas, tostones, and ice cream.

Their menu offered a variety of pizza options in terms of toppings, size, and price, tailored to the tastes of different diners—from the simplest, like the Margherita, to the most elaborate, like the Special. We customized ours to our liking, with mushrooms, corn, and pepperoni, and of course, sauce and mozzarella cheese. To drink, we chose two strawberry juices.

About 30 minutes later, they brought our pizza. It looked so delicious and at the same time so pretty that I didn’t want to eat it, but we were hungry. I have to say that even though the crust was thicker than usual, every bite not only had flavor and a soft texture, but it felt like it was made with so much love that it gave me that feeling of being at home even though we were far away. I added oregano and pepper to each slice to my liking because I love them as a complement to pizza; the strawberry sauce seemed to capture the flavor of freshly picked fruit—it was exquisite.

I loved this dining experience. Although it wasn’t an Andean meal, it was prepared by Andeans, and most importantly, it was delicious.
