Duck & Waffle in London

London is, in my opinion one of the best cosmopolitan city in the world. However, compared to Asia, it still lacks some good late night eateries if you fancy a decent bite past midnight. One exception is the Duck & Waffle that is open 24 hours a day in the city of London. I've heard of the Duck & Waffle for a long time but have never been before. You need to reserve in advance, and I made sure I did for my recent trip to London.

Ascending to the restaurant

Duck & Waffle is located on the 40th floor in an office building. There's a separate entrance from the main office entrance, and two lifts that take you directly up to the restaurant. The lift lobby had a very tall mural on the wall of a girl on a swing under a cherry blossom tree. I think that may be a nod to its sister Japanese restaurant located in the same building.

The ascend up to the restaurant in the full length glass lift was an experience in itself, even though I had already seen similar views from Horizon 22 further up the road last year. I have posted about that visit here if you want to see London skyscrapers.

A nice welcoming surprise

As the lift door opened up, I was welcomed by the restaurant sign, and the Chamber of Magic. I was quite surprised, in a nice way, as I thought this was a normal restaurant, yet this felt a bit like a Harry potter theme.

The wine bar was at the entrance of restaurant, and there's a special parking area for the wizards. I wonder if @gtg is here 🤔🧙‍♀️🪄

The decor

We were shown to our table, spacious and big enough for 5 or 6 people, but nice and cozy and not squashy for the 3 of us to sit together on the sofa with the enchanting Christmas trees behind us.
1000045481.jpg

Sadly we didn't get a table by the window, but that's ok, the restaurant area wasn't very big and we got a nice view of the outside, and the Christmas decorations inside. I managed to get a few photos before the tables were gradually filled up.

The signature dish

The open kitchen was on the other side of us. I love the buzz of the kitchen and getting a glimpse of how the dishes are prepared.

1000045483.jpg

And now finally for the food!! We had to order its signature dish, named after the restaurant. Or was the restaurant named after the dish? I'm not sure to be honest. But you've probably figured out what it was. Yup, duck and waffle - a confit duck leg on a freshly made waffle, topped with a fried duck egg and maple syrup. My photo doesn't do the dish justice because when hubs gave me a bite of duck to try, it was very tender and tasty.
1000045475.jpg

I ordered the duck benedict. This was shredded braised duck leg on a waffle topped with two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on too. When I cut open the poached egg, the golden yolk spilled over the duck and waffle making each mouthful an absolute delight.

The verdict

Normally with these types of restaurant, the food is quite mediocre as people tend to come for the hype. Surprisingly, for such a popular restaurant, they food was very good. I mean it's not the best food I had, but it's definitely food worth coming for. Then you get the view and the 24 hour convenience. And the best thing is that they have different menus for different times of the day. Finally, for London standard and the hype, it's not over priced at all.

It's definitely worth coming, just remember to book in advance.

There's a definite Potter vibe going on there. I hadn't heard of that place, but it looks interesting. I checked the menu and they do have veggie options, so we could go some time. Thanks for the tip.

It was definitely a highlight of my first day in London! I say check it out for sure!

Nice! Glad you enjoy your visit. When did you go?

They have a Wannabe duck and waffle which I thought sounded fun 😊. I think restaurants that don't include a few vegetarian options are going to lose quite a lot of business

Things are much better than when I was young and even when I first gave up meat about 30 years ago.

Oh a poached duck egg on the duck waffle!

It looks very.nice, but don't you think the magic theme is a little old hat and the place in general looks as if it's trying too hard with the decor?
That said, having a meal with amazing views over the city could never be a bad experience.

I think it's their Christmas decor, coz I'm pretty sure the photos I saw online weren't like this.

Yeah, the view of London is very nice, always adds to the ambience

brrrr glass elevator to top floor might not be my place , my fear of hights is horible. Then again i love a good wild duck breast .

i wonder how that ceiling looks when it's dark outside with all thse candle lights.

Skyscraper views are lovely, I'm sure you'll love it 😉

That's a good point about the lights. I never checked to see if they were real or for decoration only

that place looks like it had some pretty cool decor. Shame about the food and I bet it was expensive.

Think I would have had waffles and maple syrup, have I mentioned I am a selective eater LOL

Price wise was ok actually, less than £90 for the three of us, that's considered very reasonable in London. But yeah, things are quite expensive in London. I paid over £5 for a bottle of coke when I met up with the guys the other night!

Sheesh £5 for a coke mad!

Steve paid over £8 for his pint 😖

LOL, that's not too bad, was in NYC in August and paid £14 at a place near twintowers, and son paid £25 for 2 ice creams!!!

Rip Off!!

We really enjoyed London however we found it so busy. There's so much history there and so much to do an experience that the time we had was never going to be enough. We ate at some very nice establishments but we liked the fare at the pubs the best, casual atmosphere, dependable food. Oh, and my guy loves fish and chips so he had to experience a lot of fish and chip shops. Maybe too many.

If you love history, London is a great place to be. Apart from the obvious well known ones, there's so much that many people aren't aware of.

And the good old fish and chips! It can be a hit and miss sometimes, glad you went to the good places.

Duck eggs are my favourite and your food looks fantastic.

Duck eggs aren't that popular, we makes salted duck eggs and often have to go to the farm shops to get them as most supermarkets don't stick them, and those who do, are very expensive. Di you eat them instead of normal eggs?

WOW, I would love this restaurant too. Magical atmosphere, unusual but very interesting combination of meat of your choice and waffles. That was certainly an experience.
Have a nice day and thank you for the great post.

I've been meaning to try it out for a long time but never got the timing right. So glad I finally managed to make it here, and enjoyed it a lot

I'm so glad to hear that! I'm delighted that you tried it and enjoyed it. It looks great. 😊

Wow, those views are pretty amazing! I don't think I have ever had duck before. It looks quite delicious. We used to have more late night places before Covid, but after the pandemic, things sort of buttoned up and never quite got back to full swing. I think part of it too has to do with the fact that I am getting older and I don't close down the bars like I used to either!

I like duck, but don't have it often, it's has a stronger flavour than chicken and can become dry quite easily if over cooked. BBQ duck breast would be nice, try it next time!!

It's a pity how some things have changed post COVID. Maybe people gave gotten used to cooking for themselves

That probably wouldn't be a bad thing the cooking for yourself. I will probably hold off on the duck for a bit 😀

Hey I've been here! Though not Harry Potter themed when I went! Let me dig up some images.

It was worth it, pricey but fun. Their drinks with coconut foam was delicious(I'm biased towards loving coconut). Plus the view of the Gherkin.

I do say that I got lucky since I had no reservation and they let us eat.

I think this is their Christmas decor that's why I was a bit surprised. Their restaurant area isn't that big, so I guess it fills up pretty quick. It's great you got in. The evening views are much nicer!! ( Even though a couple of your images didn't load)

Ugh, I see the not loading problem now. I've created an issue for it on gitlab already: https://gitlab.syncad.com/hive/imagehoster/-/issues/17 but might want to try and focus on it. I know a workaround and will try and apply it so you can see it.

Being seated on the bar at the window was great! The whole time was just outside views. Looking forward to going back. There was another fancy restaurant with a view in London that I wanted to try, but that was much more expensive. I feel like this is a good balance, and for what they are, these guys are worth the cost.

I heard the Shard has great views as well it's on the south side of the river, looking back to the city on the north, but I've never been up. Next time you're in London, try the Horizon 22 that I linked above in my post. Thats an indoors viewing platform with incredible views, and it's free😄

Gong/Ting at the Shard was the other restaurant I mentioned 😀. LMK if you ever get to try it, definitely want to see other's perspective on it.

I actually missed out on another viewing platform in London. I forgot what it was called, but it was on my "you should check this out" list from a coworker who lived in London earlier this year. Was supposed to be free(though I hear that a lot of London buildings have to have free viewing platforms) but I got there after they'd closed and couldn't check it out :(. Definitely need another London trip haha.

That would be Sky Garden. They open up free tickets 3 weeks in advance but I hear sometimes you can walk in on the day. I tried last week but it was so busy outside

1000045570.jpg

The Shard is quite pricey I heard, so still haven't been up. I hear my old company moved their HQ up there, sadly I'm not in contact with any old colleagues anymore

The photos look amazing, and I am really glad the food was good too. There are many hidden places in London. I do love some poached eggs, haven't had them on a waffle before, but I will give it a go

I enjoy my London trips, there's always a lot of different things to do.

Awesome restaurant with the decorations inside, overall I could think of a Harry Potter theme. Also, the foods really look delicious. 😋 What a perfect place!

We had a great meal there, enjoyed it a lot
