Homemade Venezuelan Churros

For several days I'd had a craving for something sweet; it happens to me from time to time, right after lunch. Because of this, I wanted to eat churros; that's what I was craving. And it took me back to my childhood when my father would buy them for us every time he passed by a corner in El Silencio; I don't remember the name, but I remember the man who had a metal frame with an awning like a hot dog cart, but on the flat surface he had a huge cauldron of very hot oil, and with a small machine he would turn a handle and the long, strip-shaped dough with grooves would come out through a nozzle and fall into the oil in the cauldron.

Churros Venezolanos Caseros

With tongs and great agility, he would begin twisting the dough many times, creating a spiral inside the cauldron. The hot oil would immediately brown the spiral, and then he would turn it over to brown the other side. Once it was ready, he would place the entire spiral on a very clean tray and, with scissors, precisely cut it into 15 cm sticks. He would then sell them in a small bag appropriate for the number of churros and sprinkle them with sugar. Later, when I was older, I discovered a man in Plaza Candelaria who used the same method, but he shaped them into rings, and I liked those better.

As a girl, I would have given anything to eat those churros. Now, with that memory in mind, I'm making them for the first time, following the instructions in my recipe book; even though I didn't have the tools, I tried to cut and shape them both ways.

Preparation:

Bring the water to a boil and add the salt; once boiling, turn off the heat and begin adding all the flour, stirring until a smooth and manageable dough is formed.

We put the pot on the stove and added the oil; we waited for it to heat up thoroughly. Meanwhile, we put some of the dough into the piping bag and piped the churros. Since the nozzle was too small, I decided to pipe them directly into the pot without the nozzle. I wanted to imitate the rings and sticks; that was the idea.

After draining the excess oil, I cut them and then placed the sugar on a plate to spread over them.

@mshbd Thank you 👏

Venezuelan Churros looks a bit different from the Spanish churros i use to see but looks still very yummy 😋

@noemilunastorta Considering that the cuisines of both countries are different, that's possible. But I dare say that both are delicious.
