Last night’s dinner at Bedok turned into a mini celebration of all the things I love about hawker food, bright lights, ceiling fans humming, yellow chairs everywhere, and a steaming plate that makes you grin the second it reaches your table. I had a blast. The star, a Roasted Chicken Noodle set for SGD 6.20, complete with a clear soup, blanched greens, and a braised egg keeping watch on the side.
I know, some folks might raise an eyebrow at the price, chicken rice can be cheaper at many stalls, but I’d happily pay a little more for a plate that actually leaves me satisfied. This one does. The serving is generous and the cuts are premium, thick, juicy slices. No unwanted bits hiding underneath, they gave me the good parts, chunky, and I felt like I lucked out at the carving station LOL.
I picked the noodle version on purpose because I wanted something lighter for the evening. The egg noodles were spot on, springy with a gentle chew that bounces back with every bite. They were tossed in just enough savory sauce to coat each strand without turning the plate oily. I love noodles that can hold their own without drowning in gravy, and these passed the test. Slurpable, lively, and super moreish.
The sides rounded everything out like a well organized meal. The greens (hello, crunchy choy sum!) were blanched well, bringing a fresh, slightly sweet snap that cut through the richness of the roast. The braised egg added that comforting, soy flavore depth, soft-centered, well-seasoned, and perfect for dragging across the sauce. And the soup, clean and light, the kind of clear broth that resets the palate between bites so you can keep going without feeling heavy.
Quality is clearly the reason this stall charges a bit more. You taste it in the chicken, moist all the way through. You see it in the portion, an honest mound of noodles and enough meat to share (not that I did). Even the plating felt thoughtful, protein, carbs, and veg in balance, with a dab of sauce pooling just enough to mix and match as you go.
I also loved the vibe. The stall fronts were glowing, the kopitiam bustle was in full swing, and there’s something extra charming about a Bedok spot that can feed you well deep into the night. Families were catching up, uncles were drinking kopi, and the lights strung across the ceiling gave the whole place a cozy buzz. It’s exactly the kind of scene that makes simple food taste even better.
If I had one tiny wish, it’d be for a few extra stalks of greens or a spoon more sauce on the side for dipping the chicken skin, purely personal preference. Otherwise, this was a complete, satisfying set that felt worth every cent.
Overall, a win. I left feeling fueled, not stuffed, and totally content with my “pay a bit more, enjoy a lot more” decision. I’m pretty sure my evening walks in Bedok are going to be repeated, especially with the promise of roast chicken noodles waiting at the finish line LOL.
