Humid, Power Out, Harvests, Last Potatoes Dug, 1300 lbs Total, Lump, Spiders - Thursday

in Homesteading4 days ago

It had rained in the night so things were a bit damp yesterday morning and the clouds had kept a lot of heat in so it was rather warm and humid, even at 7am.

Silly that the second day of school ended up a late start since the main campus was without power. So the boys were home until about 9:30.

Working through the garden I got the squash which went to the cooler and I need to go cull some of the older today.

The cucumbers just keep going and the tomatoes are turning a bit faster. I probably should start cutting the water to them to make them ripen faster.

After the boys were to school I decided to eschew the truck for the day and work on the potatoes. 36.75 pounds for the first load.

One of the few sunflowers to bloom this year. I didn't plant any they just volunteered.

Fat squash flower on the fence.

After some food and a cool down I headed back out to dig some more spuds. I had pulled the plastic up over the marigolds but then had to dig them up to get to the potatoes. I shoved them back in the ground and covered the roots deep in soil in hopes of them surviving. The 41 pounds of potatoes went to the deck.

I bagged the prior then washed and laid out the next batch.

J has cross country practice every day after school and the bus ride took an hour the first day... So I went and picked him up. I then spent time digging the very last of the potatoes for the year! This 46 pounds brings my total for the year to 1300 pounds harvested. And after a count I have 1075 pounds in bags with the 80+ still to bag so will have about 1150 pounds in stock.

I hooked the trailer up and parked it by the coop for my grain run I have done this morning.

R was a goober and after stuffing himself in the beanbag case tried making the leap to the couch. He eventually succeeded but not until he had bounced off the couch countless times.

The coop has OOOOODLES of barn spiders on it. I went out after the coop door was shut to make sure the young birds had gone in and ended up counting a dozen spiders. This one was hauling ass making its web. It was quite a large spider too.

Have to watch cuz they are everywhere.

Shower then soak then bed.

I have been to town for grain this morning already and will go out to spread it in a while. I have to get back to work on the truck after getting harvests done. 4 day weekend for everyone and the highway is already busy with everyone heading north to camp. I'll wash the last potatoes and bag them all, should probably harvest the cabbages, the peas are about dried and ready to pick for seed, and the grain should be tilled into the garden.

1,300 pound potato harvest that’s amazing my friend!💪😊
What temperature do you store all these potatoes at?

I have them in our studio which I'm trying to keep in the 60s but it can be a bit tricky when it's hot outside. The important part for me is not so much humidity like our basement has which causes them to sprout fast even without light.

Sounds like a good plan!👍
Years ago, we bought several boxes of potatoes from a local potato farmer and put them in our pump house to stay cool.
Not enough air circulation, not really cool enough as our pump house is connected to our house.
Ended up with everything sprouting….

Nice thing with potatoes is you can pull off the sprouted tendrils and plant just them. If the soil is moist they will put out roots. I had hundreds of pounds that did so last winter so they are what I planted this year. You get more potatoes if planting an actual spud but the tendrils do work.

That’s very interesting, sounds like a great way to increase your potato harvest!💪😊
