I grew up in a compound where the smell of frying plantain can literally bring everyone out to know where and who is doing justice to it. So, I still prefer salty foods, not that kind of salty, but one where you can actually feel the taste of it, most of the foods we cook needs salt, I doubt if any of them really needs sugar, none, if I must say, it had to be salt, so its salt for me all the way.
Not that I don't like sugary foods, I do, am a fan of cold coke or cold Pepsi, I take it a lot, I love licking lollipops a whole lot too, when stressed in school and famished, its most times gala and lacasera for me. But sugar has not really been my thing, its sweet though, but still.....but salty food is home, you feel everything home in it, if you eat out, Salty food, however, is home. One of the reason why I love buying suya on my way home at night, how they sprinkle it with yaji and wrap it up in a newspaper, I always want to get home fast so as to devour it with a cold pure water. .
My favorite is fried yam and pepper sauce, I can do anything to not miss it, I love the yam to be well sprinkled with salt before frying, you would love the taste of it. It will be so fluffy and crunchy, now paired with a pepper sauce that hits differently..salt, pepper, onion, groundnut oil, Maggi and all. Writing now, I am reminded of those time in my secondary days when 50naira could change your mood and satisfy your hunger, we’d queue up beside Mama Biola kiosk, including teachers and other adults, we would all queue we want to withdraw money from a bank ATM. After buying that, we get a chill sachet water with it and find a tree to sit under, when you devour it, you just feel as if nothing else matters again.
Still, there are moments when sugary foods comes to look like the best, you know when there is a birthday party and there's puffpuff, there's the various soft drinks, aand most importantly there's, your tongue itself will just begin to water and when I now find out there's chinchin also, I love it so much, chinchin is my thing. But even with all that, it's still salt all the way, I will still crave it.
Salt is good, am not saying too eat too much of it, but salt, there was a time I was strong and one of co-patient in the ward was asked to be taking his pap without sugar but with salt, wht2, that day I understood differently, if we want to preserve certain things, we still make use of salt, when we have this hot water or steam burn stuff , they still ask us to spray some salt on it, if a food is not sweet enough, no one would ask you to add sugar, its salt, when frying groundnut, its salt we use, salt brings out the aroma of food, you won't need to announce that you are cooking jollof rice or melon soup before anyone knows. So if am asked to choose, am sure you know what I would still go for.....salty foods.
