For many traditional shops, closing on Sundays isn’t about being lazy. It’s a lifestyle choice. Many small eateries or restaurants are busy all week preparing ingredients, serving customers, and running their business, leaving them almost no real time to rest. Having a day off allows them to briefly spend time with family and recharge. For consumers, though, it can feel a little inconvenient. Luckily, there are convenience stores open year-round, but they lack a certain warmth and the lively “street vibe” of small shops.

On a Sunday, when almost all food stalls are closed, the one stall that’s still open feels especially precious. The owner is a hunched-over grandmother. Her stall doesn’t have fancy signs or flashy decorations, just an old pushcart, a warm yellow lamp, and the faint aroma of food drifting through the air. I ordered a portion of rice noodle rolls, and she greeted me warmly, chatting with me while she prepared the rolls.

Besides rice noodle rolls, the grandmother also sells various pastries and buns—simple, filling foods. The steaming basket released a comforting aroma, and before long, I was ready to take my food and go. The rice noodle rolls were surprisingly delicious. The grandmother really saved me; after all, I was getting tired of the prepackaged meals from convenience stores. Maybe in the future, society will become increasingly convenient, but as long as there are still shop owners willing to open on Sundays, the city will keep a bit of its warmth and breathing space.
