It was that painful time again—figuring out what to eat. Most of the time, I usually rotate between a few regular places because I already know their food suits my taste, and since I’ve tried them before, there’s almost no risk of disappointment. That’s why I keep going back. But even food you like can get boring after a while, so every now and then, I feel the need to discover a few new backup spots.

I happened to walk past this food stall that promoted itself with a teppanyaki-style cooking setup. There were lots of clips hanging in front of the stall, giving it a bit of that stir-fry street food vibe. Somehow it immediately caught my attention, and I felt like trying it. I ordered my usual fried rice to see how skilled the owner was. As everyone knows, the biggest feature of teppanyaki is that everything is cooked right on the hot iron plate. The owner first threw some vegetables onto the iron plate, stir-fried them quickly, then added a little salt and black pepper. The bean sprouts were cooked in just seconds, staying crisp and juicy. Watching the ingredients move around on the hot plate was actually pretty entertaining.

Still, this wasn’t a real teppanyaki restaurant. It is just a stall using an iron plate to cook food. The owner couldn’t really interact with customers the way chefs do in a teppanyaki restaurant, where they casually chat while cooking right in front of you. Customers also couldn’t sit comfortably and enjoy the whole cooking process up close.

When I got my fried rice, I noticed there was even a simple bit of plating. The owner added some broccoli on the side to decorate the otherwise ordinary-looking fried rice, which already made it feel different from regular fried rice sold elsewhere. The aroma was also especially rich.

When the moment I took the first bite, Wow, it was really oily. Definitely different from ordinary fried rice, but not entirely in a good way. Overall, the flavor was acceptable, but honestly, it was just too greasy. So in the end, this place probably won’t make it onto my personal food list
