What’s the difference between the Taipei International Food Show and a regular food fair? I think the government’s involvement is more significant in the food show, leading to more policy promotion and subsidies aimed at boosting Taiwan’s food-related industries. There are also country-specific booths where companies promote their national foods. On the other hand, regular food fairs are usually led by private organizations with less emphasis on policies, and everything is more market-driven. As long as companies pay the fee and meet the regulations, they can set up a booth. For the average person, the main focus is still on whether the food tastes good and is reasonably priced.
For example, the food show has two main themes: future foods and food safety and sustainability. These themes reflect government initiatives. In the future foods section, some products emphasize recyclability or circular economy practices, while others focus on low-carbon ingredients or digital processing to maintain stable flavors and quality. There are also some innovative and interesting foods, like freeze-dried coffee cubes that can be prepared with cold water. One surprise was seeing influencers filming on-site, using lively and humorous methods to introduce various foods. It was pretty entertaining, though I’m not sure if they were officially partnered with the event or just there to create content.
Of course, local specialty foods were everywhere. I saw premium Koshihikari rice from Yunlin County and milkfish from Tainan's fisheries association. While wandering around, I came across pineapple-flavored "Kuai Kuai" snacks from Taitung, which was really unique, though they weren’t offering samples. The Hualien booth was noticeably more prominent than those from other regions, which makes sense given Hualien's beautiful mountains and water. However, with the recent frequent earthquakes, people have been hesitant to visit, so the Hualien city government has been actively promoting Hualien’s high-quality agricultural products at various exhibitions I’ve attended recently.
My favorite section, the international foods area, wasn’t too crowded. But the Iberico ham show at the Spain pavilion, the high-quality chocolates at the Czech pavilion, and the sauces, seaweed, and herbal teas at the Saint Lucia pavilion left a strong impression. To be honest, the food show had a lot of booths and exhibitors, but their main target audience seemed to be corporate buyers rather than regular consumers like me. Still, having an indoor space to explore, learn, and enjoy delicious food during the hot summer was pretty nice.
