I learned a new term while I was out shopping today—“Innovative Sports”. At first, I had no idea what it meant, but after checking it out, I realized, hey! Isn’t this just like the flashing grid game I mentioned before? The name doesn’t really matter. The concept is pretty much the same. Basically, it’s a game where players jump on different colored tiles to get through levels. These kinds of games are still pretty niche here. Only trend-chasing young people are really into them. Honestly, if no new gameplay ideas come along, I think a wave of closures might hit these kinds of businesses soon.

There was also an AR dodgeball game, where players wear an AR headset and sensor wristbands. In the game world, you can throw energy balls and use shields to block attacks—basically a fun, high-energy dodgeball match. It was my first time seeing something like that, and the kids playing it looked like they were having a blast. To outsiders, it just looked like they were jumping and running around, but since I’ve done a bit of research on AR/VR/MR headsets, I had a general idea of what was happening. It's basically a virtual reality game. These kinds of VR games have been around for a while now, but because the experience is pretty pricey, not many people are into it.

The theme of the event was called “Innovative Sports”, which refers to products created from combining sports with new technologies like IoT, virtual reality, or big data to make exercising more fun and engaging. The idea is to help people stay active more often. There’s another similar term called “sports technology”, which refers to tech products and services related to sports, for example, athletes using wearable devices with motion tracking to improve their performance during training, or fans using ticket platforms to easily buy game tickets. That counts as sports technology too.

From what I saw, not many people really cared about “Innovative Sports”. Honestly, this was the first time I’d heard the term myself. Most people just came to check it out and left after a quick look. It cost NT$290 to try out each of the two experiences about the same as a movie ticket, so it’s more fun if you go with friends. Still, not many people were actually trying it. Even though the companies were doing their best to promote it, it didn’t seem to be catching on very well.

@tipu curate
