Hi foodies and friends, how are you? I hope you’re all doing well.
Is anyone here observing the Ramadan fast as well? What defines the atmosphere during Ramadan? In Indonesia, it’s synonymous with the emergence of takjil vendors popping up everywhere. Almost every street is filled with vendors every afternoon. And it’s synonymous with breaking the fast together. Here, breaking the fast together is usually done outside the home, or perhaps at a restaurant or other venue. These days, a nice spot is almost always chosen by everyone because it can be posted on their social media.
This time, my office organized an event to break the fast together at a restaurant with an all-you-can-eat buffet theme. The selection of food wasn’t huge, but it was certainly intriguing.

The food was neatly arranged and looked so appealing that just looking at it made us almost want to grab everything, but for myself, I only took some diced fruit to start breaking my fast, black pepper beef, sweet and sour chicken, and stir-fried broccoli. I also took some pickled tofu—well, I took that because it was served in a small glass, haha. Luckily, it tasted good.

Even though it’s called an all-you-can-eat buffet, in reality none of us could finish much food, especially with the limited time. Even I, who only took the food listed above, couldn’t try any of the heavier dishes—though I did eat six slices of durian.

It seemed like we spent less time eating than chatting and taking photos for the office group, because after that we had to go home. If asked whether eating at an all-you-can-eat place is worth it while fasting, I don’t think so. Because when breaking the fast, we could only eat a little.

Even so, we were still happy and went home feeling joyful. Hopefully next year we can experience this again.
