You should try it someday. You may opt for the smaller kind of mortar and pestle for ease of pounding too.
For me, I don't have a specific type of Yam but the only factor that I put into consideration when buying my yam is that it must be an old yam (not newly harvested ones). The newly harvested ones will not give you a good texture. No matter how you pound it, it will not form very well.
