Safed Matar(white chickpea) with Kulcha- Famous Indian Street Food..

Today i would like to share the recipe of Safed Matar with Kulcha this white peas curry made up of onion & Tomato gravy with the magic of indian spices serves is served with kulcha (soft, leavened flatbread madeup of wheat flour).This curries are often found more on streets rather than fine dine restaurants and hence it is termed as matar ki chaat or matar chaat, as it homemade, so it is healthy and lip smacking north Indian Cuisine, which is delicious to serve, from kids to adults everyone like to have it. Instead of kulcha you can serve with any kind of bread or Indian partha or Roti. Try this delicious and authentic indian recipe, you gonna love it for sure.

Ingredients 📃


• 1 cup dried white peas.
• pinch of Baking Soda.
• 1 medium Chopped onion.
• 1 medium Chopped tomato.
• 3-4 Chopped green chili.
• 2 inch of Grated Ginger.
• 4-5 cloves of garlic.
• 1 tbsp of cumin.
• punch of asafoetida.
• 1 tbsp of Kashmiri Lal Powder.
• 1 tbsp of Garam Masala powder.
• 2 tbsp of lemon Juice.
• salt to taste.
• water as required.
• Butter for Toast.
• Readymade Kulcha Breads.

Rinse the white peas twice or thrice to remove the Dirts.

Soaked them for atleast 3 hours.After 3 hours you will notice such changes in your white peas which indicates it is ready to boil.

Drain the water and then transfer into the pressure cooker with 4 cups water.

Add salt and Baking Soda,pressure cook for 5-6 whistles or till peas gets cooked well.

Once the pressure release, then remove the led, you will notice some of the skins will come off, but not to worry, it does not do the dish any harm, in terms of texture, appearance or taste. With the help of Spatula(not masher) mash the pea roughly. Keep it aside.

Now Heat oil in the kadai,Add cumin and Garlic cloves & Green chilli, saute it for a sec or untill it start sputtering.

Add the chopped Onio, saute it untill it get translucent.

Add the Chopped Tomatoes, Cooked it untill it soft & Mashy.

Lower the flame, add all the spices mentioned above, be careful there is high chances of burning Spices. Add few drops of water immediately to avoid Burning of spices. On lower flame, cooked the spices untill oil start releasing from it sides.

Now add the boiled Matar into masala, stir it well so everything combined well.

Note - Adjust the seasonings and spices according to your taste preferences

Add the water, cook it in simmer flame, Mash some cooked white peas slightly with a spatula. This helps in thickening the preparation.

Matar has an tendency to get thicker soon, so add the water accordingly. You can keep consistency as per your taste and preferences.


Bread Kulcha

I have used ready-made Kulcha which is easily available in any bakery else you can try any type of bread too.

Heat the tawa with Butter or Clarified Ghee. Toast the kulcha from both the sides untill it get light brown.

Serve the hot Safed Matar, Squeeze some lemon juice & Sprinkle chat masala on it, try it with buttery Kulcha.
