A few days ago, one of my neighbors, who is a pastry chef, received a very special order: her client wanted chess-shaped cookies for her son’s birthday, as he is passionate about the “science of the game.”
Since she knows my husband is a chess coach, she didn’t hesitate to ask him for help. She needed the chessboard grid to be as precise as possible, with that perfect balance between light and dark squares. I was there, listening to the conversation, while he patiently explained to her how to divide the space, how to calculate proportions, and even how to make everything look harmonious at a glance.

Hace unos días, una de mis vecinas, que es repostera, recibió un encargo muy especial: su clienta quería unas galletas en forma de ajedrez para el cumpleaños de su hijo que es un apasionado por el “deporte ciencia”.
Como ella sabe que mi esposo es entrenador de ajedrez, no dudó en pedirle ayuda. Necesitaba que la cuadrícula del tablero quedara lo más precisa posible, con ese equilibrio perfecto entre casillas claras y oscuras. Yo estaba ahí, escuchando la conversación, mientras él le explicaba con paciencia cómo dividir el espacio, cómo calcular proporciones y hasta cómo lograr que todo se viera armónico a simple vista.

But that wasn’t all. She also borrowed some pieces from one of our games to use as references (and decorations). Seeing the two of them—one from the world of chess and the other from the world of baking—working together struck me as simply magical.
Each cookie, with its shades of green and chocolate, was placed with precision to achieve that signature grid effect. On top of that, the pieces brought the scene to life, turning something sweet into a small work of art inspired by the game.
When she finished, she showed us the result… and wow! The presentation turned out beautifully. It had that touch of dedication you can see in the details, in the care, in the time invested. You could tell she put a lot of effort into it and that it wasn’t just another order. That moment left me thinking about something very simple yet powerful: when it comes to creating, there are no limits. Ideas intersect and knowledge blends.
Creativity definitely always finds a way.
Pero la cosa no quedó ahí. También le pidió prestadas unas piezas de uno de nuestros juegos para usarlas como referencia (y decoración). Verlos a los dos, uno desde el mundo del ajedrez y la otra desde la repostería, trabajando en conjunto, me pareció simplemente mágico.
Cada galleta, con sus tonos verdes y chocolate, fue colocada con precisión para lograr ese efecto de cuadrícula tan característico. Encima, las piezas le dieron vida a la escena, convirtiendo algo dulce en una pequeña obra inspirada en el juego.
Cuando la terminó, nos mostró el resultado… y ¡wow! La presentación quedó muy bonita. Tenía ese toque de dedicación que se nota en los detalles, en el cuidado, en el tiempo invertido. Se notaba que le dedicó mucho y que no significaba un pedido más. Ese momento me dejó pensando en algo muy simple pero poderoso: cuando se trata de crear, no hay límites. Las ideas se cruzan y los saberes se mezclan.
Definitivamente, la creatividad siempre encuentra su camino.
