Lunch at “Confirm Best Lah Nasi Lemak”

in #food2 days ago

Today’s post is actually about my lunch yesterday, and it started with one of my usual “I’m just passing by…” moments around Upper Boon Keng. While walking near Kallang MRT, I opened Google Maps, filtered for food, and spotted a name that instantly caught my eye: Confirm Best Lah Nasi Lemak.

Quite a confident claim right? But after eating there, I think they’ve earned the right to say it… early review, but still. 😄

First look, bright, playful, a little bit cheeky

The stall sits inside a lively coffeeshop, the kind where ceiling fans are spinning non-stop and people are happily chatting over plates of rice and noodles. Neon-style signs for beer, colorful menu boards, and a good mix of office crowd and residents, classic Singapore lunch vibe.

The nasi lemak stall itself is impossible to miss. Big green signage, light bulbs framing the board, and a full menu of “Set 1” to “Set 8”. The photos look modern, not the old-school banana leaf style. Even the tagline feels playful and a bit out-of-the-box, which already hinted that this wasn’t going to be your typical nasi lemak.

Then I noticed something that made me do a double take:

Pork Nasi Lemak.

Whoa. Quite bold! Not something you see every day.

Starting simple, getting a feel of the basics

As tempted as I was to go straight for the pork, I decided to behave myself and start with the basics first. I wanted to understand their foundation before going for the wild options. So I ordered their standard chicken nasi lemak set, plus an iced coffee drink to complete the meal.

The presentation was already different, everything served in a kraft paper tray instead of the usual plate. It feels more modern, almost like a casual café-style nasi lemak.

The first thing that surprised me: the rice.

Instead of the usual coconut-heavy nasi lemak rice, they use garlic rice. At first I was a bit unsure, but after a few bites… I really liked it. The fragrance of garlic was gentle but clear, making the rice tasty even on its own. It still felt “nasi lemak-ish” enough to be comforting, but with a twist that makes the stall stand out.

Chicken, ikan bilis, sambal... all the key players

The fried chicken was nicely done. The skin had that light crisp while the meat inside stayed juicy and tender. Not over-marinated, not dry, just a very good, satisfying piece of chicken that I happily demolished.

Ikan bilis and peanuts are deal-breakers for me in nasi lemak, and here they did well. The ikan bilis was properly crunchy, not chewy or soft, and it stayed crisp even after sitting next to the warm rice for a bit. Peanuts added the familiar extra bite.

The sambal? I liked it too. It leaned towards the balanced side, not a crazy spicy sambal that burns your tongue, but still flavorful enough to mix nicely with the rice and egg. Speaking of egg, the half boiled-then-fried egg did its job: simple, classic, and essential.

Overall: very satisfied, and already planning my next visit

For a “just passing by” lunch, this turned into a very pleasant discovery. The stall is confident, the recipe is slightly reinvented, and the modern presentation matches the whole concept. Most importantly, the food is actually good, not just hype from the name.

I walked away very satisfied, and now I’m already thinking about what to try next. That Pork Nasi Lemak is calling my name, and I feel like this is the kind of place where cravings will slowly grow with each visit.

So yes, I’ll definitely be back soon. Maybe next time I’ll be brave enough to confirm for myself if it’s really “Best Lah.” 😉
