REVIEW] Banh Ep 1992 – The taste of childhood in the heart of Hue

in #food8 days ago

Today I visited Banh Ep 1992 – a small shop local on Hoang Quoc Viet street. This shop has a rustic vibe, like a small village with wooden tables - open space, and many red Vietnamese flags hanging high, creating a simple but beautiful scene🔥🔥🔥🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳

First impression: clean place, friendly staff, fast service. I came in the afternoon and it was quite crowded but didn't have to wait long.

✨ What I ordered:

  1. Banh ep pate thit (pate & meat)
This was the first dish I tried – and honestly, it was so good. The cake is made from minced meat mixed with pate, pressed thin and fried with egg on a crispy rice paper. Served with a bunch of fresh herbs: lettuce, bean sprouts, banana flower, sliced morning glory, cucumber, Vietnamese basil… and sweet-sour salad made from papaya and carrot.
Wrap everything together, dip in Hue-style fermented fish sauce (mam nem) – the taste is just perfect. Fatty pate, crispy veggies, chewy cake, all balanced with a strong fish sauce flavor.

  1. Oc nhoi (stuffed snails)
I also ordered one small pot of stuffed snails – only 40k VND (about 1.5 USD) for 6 cups. The snail meat is minced and mixed with pork, mushrooms, black pepper then steamed in small bowls.

Topped with lemongrass, lime leaves and chili, make dish more fragrant, not fishy at all, warm and tasty. This dish is worth trying because it takes effort to prepare and the taste is really "Hue".

  1. Tre

I also tried tré – another traditional Hue dish. It's made from raw pork and pork skin, mixed with spices like black pepper, chili, garlic, shallots, and vinegar, then wrapped in banana leaves and left to ferment naturally.

After a few days, it becomes slightly sour, chewy, and has a very unique smell. This is the kind of food that many Vietnamese love – it's flavorful, a bit funky, and goes really well with beer or rice.

But I have to say – if you're a foreigner and not used to fermented or raw-style meat, you might find it strange. And if your stomach is sensitive, maybe eat just a little to test first. I personally like it, but it’s not for everyone.

💰 Price & menu
The menu has many Hue local dishes like:

IMG_5847.jpeg

  • Banh ep with shrimp and meat

  • Banh ep with meat

  • Banh ep with pate

  • Special banh ep

  • Tre (fermented pork)

  • Stuffed snails

  • Fruit juice, peach tea, kumquat tea, bottled water...

Prices are from 1 – 2 dollars per dish. Very affordable and the quality is better than expected.

🌿 Space & my feeling
The space reminds me of my childhood – when banh ep, mam nem and veggies were part of many afternoons after school. It feels familiar, warm, and full of old memories.

On the wall, there is a slogan I like:
"An yen, tu nhien se binh yen"
(Stay calm, and peace will come naturally).

And honestly, when sitting here, eating and looking at the street from the window, I really felt that peace.

📌 Conclusion:
If you are looking for a place to enjoy real Hue flavor – tasty, cheap and full of local vibes – Banh Ep 1992 is a great spot. Especially for those who want to taste something from childhood or just craving a real Hue-style banh ep.

My personal rating: 9/10, visit 1992, you won’t regret it!
